O.K., I have a question for you Guys. I have my box set up to blank the screen in power saving mode after 3 minutes, and then I switch my monitor off while I'm at work, or leaving for awhile.Will I be able to set it up to do the same thing running FaD?

Exclamation How to remove excess nodes from THINK

First off...I can't take credit for figuring this out on my own. Our own TwinkleToe's had faced this problem before and he got help from msmadiso over at the FaD board. So TT passed on what he had learned from msmadiso...and I am in turn passing it on to you guys. lol.

The Problem

A common way to install FaD on multiple computers is to install it once, get it configured and then just copy the FaD folder over to the new computer. The only problem with this installation method is that it also copies over the computer name from the source computer and when you run THINK, it will then allocate jobs to that computer...even though that computer doesn't exist!

Example:

NodeX = Source Computer
NodeY = New Install

After you download the first set of jobs, THINK will then allocate a job to NodeX and NodeY. NodeY is the only one that's going to be doing any crunching, so we need to remove NodeX.

The Solution

1) Stop think (actually, just select exit from the tray).
2) Delete NodeX.tlg from your installation directory.
2a) Remember, this is the Node of the source computer, not the nodename of the computer you're installing to!
3) You can then either reboot, or just restart tray.exe, server.exe, and think.exe.
4) I am assuming that you do not want to restart processing of the job that NodeX has been processing, so you will then want to rightclick on the job, select hold, right click again, and allocate to nodename.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. Mine didn't work out that way exactly, but I got what I needed thanks to you Gouki!

First, I went in and changed the number of copies from 4 to 2. Next, I had to stop THINK. Open up the folder. Delete Node.tlg and Node-1.tlg. Then I renamed Node-2.tlg to Node.tlg and Node-3.tlg to Node-1.tlg. I restarted the computer and put all jobs on hold. I had to do each one individually since the Shift-click won't work on holding jobs (for me anyways). I then deallocated each job and assigned only the first two, releasing the others. Now, to do the same to another computer.

I don't think so, stats do not have to be 100% accurate, to think anything is taht accurate is naive... Your speedometer is not accurate yet you continually trust it's "close enough" to guage how fast you are travelling... similar here, it's a guage of "approx" how fast you are travelling. we can judge a lot of things by the stats, but none are taken as gospel (at least I hope not) Nothing has unlimited backups, nothing has redundancy to the point that failure is impossible, the fact there are 4 or more FaD servers is a great amount of redundancy, however computers like people, often fail to communicate properly, and ultimately things are lost, now with a trial of regaining those lost communications there is more critisism...

Great point, WoO. I think a lot of crunchers have missed this point. This whole exercise is about improving the current system. It's not an attempt to whitewash past mistakes (viz. UD ), but to be honest and open about what previously went wrong and how to move on from there. Let's move on as well.

Cheers

WoO,

This started out as a posting to suggest that all the non-informational chat stuff, viewpoints etc which have been posted above should be deleted from this thread.

I see that you have pre-empted me by opening a new thread ! Great. I assume that you'll move all of the purely helpful information stuff (e.g. Vester, Mondo and tgxiii's posts) over to the new thread 'in due course' as they say.

(You could always get a mod, for example that bundle of energy CBB, to help you....j/k)

TT, you are aware that vesters link to the linux readme is the same outdated one that's on the linux download page.

gouki's solution is no longer required (since tlg's are read by update time to decide wether a job should be allocated)

I also updated the links to the autostats in the new post (all of this was done at the time I created a new thread) also a link to the maps was added...

so now I must ask, whatever do you mean?
