Sound like someone has done you the honors of getting a nasty virus on it for you.

Bob.C's System Info

Welcome to XPC, offspr1ng17m!

I agree with n7vxj there, sounds like you have some nasties onboard!

Have a look at Grisoft's Free Anti-Virus Program,AVG

Then look at Spybot S&D, Followed by AdAware SE Personal

Should clean things up a bit!

You might also want to try Trendmicro's free on line virus scan.

I'd look at trying to default the bios to factory standard so that you can recognize the XP software CD and try to do a repair off the CD -

as you seem to be having oddles of trouble loading anything - try running a spyware sweep here - http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan - it's pretty good and has over 200,000 threat definitions.

Also - the symantec website has a scanner there for viruses and trojans - http://www.symantec.com

wish you well -

what type hard drive is it? - if you have a maxtor - recommend that you use the powermax utility to low level format the drive before a rebuild - warning - this will destroy your data - if you have a western digital - you might try digital lifeguard off their website -

a low level format writes zeros to every data field on the drive basically erasing everything on the drive - not just deleting the file structures - I do this to used drives before loading anything on them so I know I'm starting with un-infected product.

Download Stinger to a folder somewhere, or even a USB drive. Start up in Safe Mode and run the programme. If you are lucky your virus will be on it's list.

if those 2 are great programs - can you add links to them or get them into our download area if they aren't already there?
