Environment:

Novell 5.1, servers
Netware Client 4.83 patched
Windows XP Pro

Here is what I'm trying to do.

I want to be able to upgrade/install software through a login script. Examples:

1. An Anti-virus program.
2. Possible upgrade to a newer client.
3. Programs such as SAP, etc.
4. NDPS printing.

The present user profile that's being used doesn't allow the user to install programs from either the floppy, CD-rom, downloaded files, etc. per company policy. Right now this account type, as it's setup, won't allow any programs to be installed on the PC through that login script. When the account is setup as a power user or administrator, the installation is allowed. But so is access to install programs from the floppy, CD-rom, etc.

How do you create or modify an account type to allow software to be pushed out through a login in script yet keep the user from being able to install apps on these business PC's when they are not suppose to? We are looking at rolling out some 200 of these and some are at different locations.

Thanks for any help.

Hmmm If I remember correctly you should be able to create a call to a script that will install the application with Admin privs and then when the install is done it will automatically close out the admin account and finish logging in with the end user's account privs. I will see if I can get a hold of a friend that is a novell admin and maybe he can shed some light on how to do this

Hi Mntsnow!

Hope you and yours are doing well.

Thanks for the reply. It's greatly appreciated.

The SAP administrator is wanting to run his scripts when the user logs into SAP, which is after the user logins in to Novell, and independent of the Novell login script. So hopefully there is a way to give that installation "administrator rights" to do that as you stated in your reply.

Eagerly awaiting any info you can get for me.

Have a great day!

Nathan

Thanks Mntsnow. I appreciate all the help from you and your friend also.

XP Pro with all the patches installed from the MS update site seems to be really stable in the environment we have here. I like it much better than 2K. But we'll see down the road. Basic amount of ram should be 256 MB.

One thing that is disappointing is what you have to go through to get the Remote Assistance to work on a local network. It's not simple enough like Netop is for the user to double click it and we can get in. But other than that, I actually like it despite the space it takes up. But with today huge hard drives, that's really not a problem.

Thanks again to you both for the effort your putting out for me!
