I am trying to set up a server using LynksysBEFSR41 and Bulletproof FTP Server without much success.

I went into my router setup and forwarded ports 20 to 21.
Setup Bulletproof to port 21,created a account with User Name and Password(my IP does not accept anonymous accounts)
Selected a directory with all attributes selected.
I start it up and it goes online at port 21.
When I try to access it using CuteFTP and my No-IP hostname I get the error message:

Cant login Disconnecting.

I get the same message if I use my Wan address instead of my hostname.
I have also tried the server in passive mode with my NO-IP hostname added. still the same.
Any help very welcome.
Merry Xmas

Welcome to PC Central.

Are you able to connect to the server from the private network side? We'll ignore the LinkSys for now and make sure the FTP server is running. What operating system is on the server? Hardware is of no moment at this point, just the software. Where are you attempting to login from? From the server, another computer on the network or another computer outside the network?

I do not know what the Private network side means.
My server is on Windows XP Pro.
I am testing it from a website I found on the net:
http://www.bpftpserver.com/?page=ftptest&lang=en
This is the reply that I get after testing:
Error : Cannot open data connection to 192.168.1.3:
Error : 192.168.1.3 is a private ip which can not be connected over internet!
Error : check your server settings for passive mode ip!
Error : Cannot connect to remote host
Error : LIST command failed
Thanks

Welcome to XPC Jackdee.

I take it that your FTP server is located at 192.168.1.3 correct?

I assume when your trying to connect to it from a DIFFERENT computer on your network that computer has an ip address of 192.168.1.xx where xx is a different number from the FTP server correct?

When Bill asked about "private network" that is all of the systems on the same ip addressing scheme on the local side of the linksys router/firewall. Just FYI the 192.168.1.xx addresses are a non internet routeable and can only be used for "private networks" :)

Are you sure the FTP server is infact "OnLine" and not just running as the FTP server has 2 modes .... When the ftp program is in the ONLINE mode the icon in the tasktray will be Yellow instead of Red

I hadn't seen that website before. I let it try to connect to me and it choked. Must be since I'm not running an FTP server :) That looks like a decent tool, thank you for posting the link.

Error : 192.168.1.3 is a private ip which can not be connected over internet!

That line pretty much says it all. You need a public IP for the world to connect to you from outside. If your ISP allows you to have a server on their network then you can get an IP from them that'll do the job for you. To get around that problem for a moment, log into your LinkSys and see what IP it's using for the WAN then enter that IP on the website you used for testing. If that doesn't make sense, just say so. I don't always write too clearly.

Mntsnow knows the Windows stuff better than I ever will so I won't say anything about that part.

Yes Bill is correct in that if you want your FTP server to be accessable by systems on the "outside" of your home network then you will need to use the "public" IP that your ISP has issued to you
