syntax

I bought a router last night. Im trying to LAN 2 computers together using my cable connection and play Couter-Strike. We can both browse web pages but when we both try to connect to the same game server we lose connection until we close the game. Any ideas?
Thanks
Are you actually losing the internet connection or just being dropped from the server? Are you using STEAM?
both machines have 'unique' CD Keys ? - cant use same copy on internet games.

Some games will not let you connect together, as you share an IP address from the router, the game server will only allow one instance!

cheers fella. seems like a good 'ol bunch.
Back to the above, also had another thought...
Check to make sure each PC can play CS/connect to an internet server individually. Think CS and Steam will allow you to both connect as long as you have unique CD-Key's/SteamID's. But i think there a fair few issues around this. Same applies to WON authentication too.

yeah.....
on a LAN game he can play against his friend.....just not on the internet.....i tried to change the number and stuff but it never worked...LAN games are more interesting anyway, cause your around "friends" not overly serious players on the net
if you cant just play against each other make sure your firewall is off(if theyre using xps firewall)
as for ip addresses.....that can be cleared up with good ol peer to peer networking (ICS) between your computer and your friends. even though the router should make both computers on different ips like 192.168.1.2, and 192.168.1.3...etc.

The IP addresses behind the router, ie on the computers in your network, will be dynamically assigned, and so different!
On the Front end of the router, ie the Internet, there will be the one constant IP addy of the router! Therefore, the game server sees one instance of an IP Addy and then another identical one as you both log on.
For example, if you and your friend both logged into here, you would both show the same IP!
Some game servers will allow this, others will not!

Did this get sorted?
unresolved issues always leave me pondering.... :)
