Hi.

Hoping for some help please.

Recently I've been using a Video chat site which uses (I think) a java scipt for the chat window. Up until a day ago it worked fine. Then yesterday after the PC had been running fo about 12hrs, I noticed when I came back to it that there was a message about the machines virtual memory was extremely low. Unfortunately I did not write down what it exactly said. I just clicked and closed the message window.

After that I started having problems with this particular site. Now when ever I visit this site it loads up ok until I refresh the window or change to a different room on the site. Once I refresh or change rooms the chat part of the window doesn't seem to reload properly and is unusable.

Also when this happens IE then sucks 100% of the CPU resources and the pagefile keeps growing until it runs out (as I've just noticed while I'm typing this), niether of these are released until I close it (IE6) completely. Once it's closed the PC is back to normal.

I have scanned for virus', defraged and moved my pagefile to a seperate partition, in the hope that it would do something. I've tried re-installing IE6 over the top of it self as I cannot uninstall it.
There has been nothing new installed on the PC prior to this happening.

I am at a loss to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I can't say I yet care to use ie6 - let 6 million OTHER people work the code up to service pack 2 before I'll touch it willingly.

next - been long since you opened up the options menu and deleted temp files?

next - what operating system are you using?

next - have you emptied your recycle bin and cleaned out temp files?

next - been long since you ran a scandisk & defrag on the ole hard drive?

next - have you increased the size of your windows swap file?

the swap file and condition of the hard drive is sometimes the resource limitation - sometimes it's available RAM.

What else do you have running in the task list? - The less you have running - the more system resources you have to accept web content.

Adding RAM will help some depending on which operating system you are running and the capabilities of your motherboard to accept more.

Another thing to take a look at is what resolution you have your screen running at. The memory needed to display higher resolutions is exponential in nature - so cranking down your display resolution may help as well. Also - the color count. Most people cannot tell the difference between 65,536 colors and 16 million colors or TRUE color - but the amount of memory needed to post those displays to the screen are vastly different. You want a really fast & dirty post - crank it down to 256 colors and watch your speed go through the roof.

Give al that a shot and see what happens.

System: WinXP Pro

Anyway, I would d/l and install the latest Java Plug-In which you can find here. (http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html).

Check the Windows Update site for any patches or fixes that you haven't already downloaded and installed. Go here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/default.asp) for all downloads pertaining to WinXP Pro.

Then, I would follow the instructions on this page (http://www.xtremepccentral.com/articles/archive/01-swapfileoptimization/swapfileoptimization.html) and see if that helps. Purchasing more memory should be at the bottom of your list just above doing what I suggest below.

It looks like you have a memory leak coming from software that's installed on your computer. If all else fails, clean out all other programs on your computer that you don't need and see if the problem persists.

Let us know if you're still experiencing the same probs.
