I am running BPFTP server on Windows 2000 server and it's
running fine. The problem I am having is I can only ftp into it
using only the ip address (i.e. ftp://192.xxx.xxx.xx) and if I
try to logon using the name (i.e. ftp://ftp.xxx.xxxx.xxx) then
it does not accept it.
How can I use the server name to login instead of using ip
address.
Please HELP ! ! !
Thank you

DNS is not resolving the name. If it's an internal network server, have you started DNS or configured host files. If it's an internet accessible server, have you registered the domain and sent your IP information to the registration service? If you are using a dynamic IP address there are services like noIP.com and DynDNS.org.

Here is my situation. I have installed BPFTP server on a Windows
2000 server, the installation went smoothly but now when I try
to access it by typing the ip address i.e. ftp://192.xxx.xxx.xxx
I can get into the folder but when I try to acess it by typing
i.e. ftp://ftp.myftp.org I cannot access the folder.
I have registered the DNS with noIP.com and the ip address it's
picking up is my router address which is 81.xxx.xxx.xx, my pc ip
address is 192.xxx.xxx.xxx, I have a dynamic ip from my ISP which
is 217.xxx.xxx.xxx.
Now the ip address 81.xxx.xxx.xxx is routers ip address and my
ISP ip address 217.xxx.xxx.xxx is the routers gateway. I am
also running a program from noIP.com called noIP DUC which
updated the DNS information.
From my own knowledge what I have done.
* I have entered router ip address on the noIP.com site so
it can be associated with ftp.myftp.org.
* Updated port forwarding on my router by entering port number
21 and my pc ip address 192.xxx.xxx.xxx
* The other thing I have done is under BPFTP software I have
included my router ip address 81.xxx.xxx.xxx under the heading
passive mode also included the passive port range from 21 to
65535.
I like to mention again that I can ftp using my machine ip address
192.xxx.xxx.xxx but not the actual name i.e. ftp://ftp.myftp.org.
COULD YOU HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM I WILL BE VERY MUCH
APPRECIATED.
Thank you

Have you allowed time for the DNS changes to propagate? I've seen times from a couple of minutes to almost a day. Have you tried pinging the host, or pathping, if you have another 2000/XP box available. That will determine whether it might be an FTP or server setting by checking general connectivity.

Are you trying internally or from another location?
Since you are using 192.x.x.x.x and getting in but can't get in using the name, I am thinking your router doesn't allow loopback.
Just a thought.

Brother mholtum
I am trying internally and obviously if some tries externally then
it won't work because it does not accept the name.
Do u have any clue.
Thank you

I think your router won't permit loopback. Mine won't. But like you I can get in internally if I use the 192.x.x.x and not the name. Until your DNS works you can just use the IP of your router and use port forwarding. This would work for anyone on the outside.

Yes make sure you have the ports forwarded on your router to the ftp server. If you dont have the required ports forwarded then you wont be able to connect from outside your local network. Also Mholtum is correct in that most "soho" routers can't do loopback in which the fix is to create an entry in your "hosts" file to resolve the request
lastly you can determine if DNS has fully propogated by going to www.dnsstuff.com and using the tools there to see if your "name" resolves to the correct IP address. Until DNS servers are able to get the correct info you wont be able to use "name" resolution.
