"The latest desktop versions of Windows (Home Edition or Professional) offer significant improvements in stability, functionality, and (if you believe everything Microsoft says) performance to boot. Author and columnist Ed Tittel explains what distinguishes Home Edition from Professional and what kinds of tools and support Microsoft offers to help make the switch from your current desktop to Windows XP. If you’ve got the money and the time, Microsoft has a new desktop operating system for you. Only you can decide if spending the money and time is worth the resulting return."

I have found that SO much of my legacy software doesn't run on XP AND to update - man they are down-right proud of some of those upgrades - is so flaming expensive that it just isn't worth it.
I'm still having a serious problem buying a copy of win2kpro for $250 - good grief!!! - it ain't worth that much!!!
I'm still quite happy running most everything on win98SE with the update patches on it..... meets my needs and it's dirt cheap and easy to support. You can get an oem copy with certificate for $92 -
I play with win2kpro at work along with server and love some of the features - but have yet to feel any need what-so-ever for XP....

I'm using WinXP Pro Corporate and it's great. Quite more stable than my previous OS of choice: Win98SE and it supports all of the hardware and software I use. Memory management has been the key thing for me and was one of the main reasons I switched. I was definitely a resource hog as I usually have more than 4 or 5 programs open at the same time and with Win9x I would normally have to have something like FreeMem Pro to free up memory frequently or just plain restart the computer.
Once you're able to tweak the OS to the point where it runs smoothly in all aspects, it's wonderful. I really don't care about the looks part of it although I'll probably give a new XP Theme a try. All my programs show significant increase in speed and performance including my DC (Distributed Computing) clients: UD Think and D2OL. Adobe Photoshop runs faster. Finally, best of all there are far less BSOD, freezes, and programs not responding incidents. My only complaint for now is that I can't get Counterstrike (one of my FAV games) to run smoothly in WinXP. Even with the necessary updates through Microsoft's website, the game just doesn't run well at all. But, I'm sure I'll get that fixed soon. :)
If you can afford the upgrade and if you're up for a new OS, I'd definitely suggest you go with WinXP Pro, as the Home edition is lacking in several features I find a must.
I'm quite happy with the change from Windows 2000 to Windows XP... :)
