ok,

i bought a ECS D6VAA board so i can run 2 933s, well i have one 933 now. i still need to get another.

the boards version is 1.2 with award bios updated...

windows 2000as is updated to SP4

this is what happens.

i shutdown the computer, it unloads everything then just stops at "it is safe to turn the computer off"

at first i thought maybe its just advanced server, but i dont know.

or could it be because im only using one cpu?

i went to

power management>
set it to fail safe defaults(which has acpi enabled and apm enabled.

also disabled apm

well its still not fully shutting down after dealing with both

That worked for me, carl! Till I changed os to XP, then the same thing happened!

I just hit the power button now, if I'm shutting down then i'm there to do it!

So you did have it off during the install.....

Now go into your device manager and change the type of "computer" you have to acpi enabled. Most people try doing this by removing their existing computer type and then making the system do a hardware scan and letting it install the ACPI enabled version....Sometimes this works...Some times it doesnt...

I suggest backing up critical data before trying incase you have any problems and end up wanting to do a reinstall

i just installed 2000 pro now....with acpi enabled in the bios
good thing i backed up sp4 since that was too long of a wait

now...a fully operational D6VAA

it shuts down like i like it now...

thanks for the help as i must remember to do what you, mntsnow, said, if i erase or change the bios for some reason...

in device manager i see the acpi system devices...now, even though i didnt look before:rolleyes:

pro is a little better for me (less options i dont know how to play with, i mean use yet) as advanced server did seem like overkill....

Mntsnow...some tips on changing to ACPI HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer):

If you change type from ACPI/Non-ACPI/ACPI Multiprocessor and etc... you can do it by updating the system driver in device manager to the type you want.

On the next boot, set bios to the matching type and insert the W2K CDROM in the drive. Boot the PC to the CD and select to do a repair install of the previous installation. This repair only takes a few minutes and does not change any software settings/programs/files.

After the repair install is done, your system will boot with the new HAL just fine.

Failing to do a repair install will result in a BSOD as soon as you try to boot to the OS, but the repair install will still fix it.
