View Full Version : SBC Yahoo DSL Users
If you're using SBC Yahoo DSL standard service for $29.95 (I only pay $26.95 though), what speeds are you getting on your downstream and Upstream? I'm quite satisfied with the Downstream since there aren't any site or not many that can even support such speeds, but kinda unhappy with the upstream...
I'm located in Burbank CA and here us what I get using this link (http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2) for testing...
Downstream = 1238kbps
Upstream = 191kbps

I got SBC Yahoo DSL a bit early D:
Costs 34.95 a month (12month contract)
I'm in San Jose and bandwidthplace.com says 1.1 to 1.2Mbits downstream (~10560 ft away from CO)
I'll edit post when I get results from dslreports.com :)
You know you can change the service price, right? Just call them up and let them know you want the new lowered price and they will do it... That's what I did when it went from $49.99 to $39.99. I did a new contract wth them about a week ago and they sent me their new modem and new price of $26.95...
BTW - you don't have to return the DSL modem when you do a yearly contract with them. They are yours to keep. You just have to pay the tax of $8.00 and shipping of $12.95 shipping for the new modem...

That's good, as I have one of those fancy 2Wire routers that support wireless, wired, HPNA :D
Hmm, new contract doesn't seem too bad, I've only had the service for ~3-4 months and am happy with it.
However, I shall be moving to a new house in Jan 2004 (across the creek, maybe a hill or two away, but same CO).
Edit: Which browser did you use to test? I'm having a little getting Java and Mozilla Firebird 0.7 to play nice :o

Ah :)
Edit: DSL results:
Downstream: 1228 kbps
Upstream: 90 kbps
I'm unhappy with the upstream speed though, I can barely host a 6-player Half-Life server :(
Mine used to be 126kbps but increased to 191kbps after getting this new modem... As I know, they have their upstream rate capped at 128kbps... I don't know how I got this increase..

hmmm...lucky man :D
I used to have aol dsl because of my dad, but after 6 months of pleading and making him face the facts, we changed :D
How far away are you from your CO?
I'm not sure... How can I find out?

That's a nice connection you got there.
I'm currently using a cable connection from Chello.nl, but the upload is very bad, the download would be about 512kb, but the upload is only 16kb.
We are getting a new adsl connection though, it should get about 100kb upload, it will help me a lot because right now i'm lagging pretty bad in games.

You may find where your CO is http://www.dslreports.com/coinfo if you know it.
I used the Find Service function (left toolbar) at dslreports.com :)

Well it sounds worse then it is, if no one uploads then you can play games with a ping of like 50-60.
Now here is the trick, the connection is officially only for 1 computer, and you are actually only allowed to use it on 1 computer.
However the server here at home splits it over 5 computers, so each of us only has 1/5th of what we normally should have.
And still it does pretty good, however when someone uploads then the connection will be totally crap, to load a simple page will already take like 20 seconds.
So it's not a bad connection, but it just ain't enough for the 5 of us. :D

just for comparison.......im using power link btw.
d/l - 2745kbps
u/l - 192kbps
All those ads about 1.5MB ~ 2.0MB download speeds don't turn me on one bit to be honest with you.
Charter is offering 2MB download speeds for $39.99 but I decided to pass that up...
You can have 5MB download speeds and won't make a difference since you can't find sites that can handle that type of upload speed from their servers. Very rare you see download speeds of even 1MB...

My cable service advertises download speeds up to 3Mbit/sec. I see this all the time. I frequently get download speeds from 350-500KB (not k-bit). I'm loving it!! 1.5mbit? p-shaw, no thank you!!
