As part of my ongoing quest for true geekdom I went this morning to take my technician class amateur radio license, and actually passed. Not too shabby for something I didn't start studying for until Thursday evening.
For those of you that may be interested, you can do alot of really cool things with radio. It's not just sitting there beating out morse code. You can send data over packet radio amongst a host of other cool things.
Check it out: http://www.arrl.org

my dad is a license ham operator!
he uses W3BT.
there is a site that has some of the pictures from their rendevous that they have every year.
it is usually the first weekend in June.
the group of them and their families have a get together.
on friday they check out each other's equipment and find out who bought what and how they are using it.
on saturday they have a barbecue for the ham operator and their families.
on sunday they get together for breakfast.
i'll post the site as soon as he gets home.
SJ, you can check out echolink here: www.echolink.org

A licensed ham operator? OK. Uh, I'm a licensed motor vehicle operator. Now if I encounter you driving your pig through an intersection, who has the right of way? :D

Thanks for the Links Robin, unfortunately its about 1000 miles from me.
qrz is a good site, been poking around on it for a while.
I got my callsign today, kd5zlu which isnt too bad. Borrowed a handheld from a co-worker so I am on the air at least on VHF and UHF.
I am going to give EchoLink a go tonight.
