Acortech (http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/1066243038122285/9/nc--^202http^3A^2F^2Fwww^2Epricewatch^2Ecom^2Fd^2F3602 ^2Ehtm/Modem/1376/CenDyne%2056K%20V.92%20External%20Internet%20Seria l%20DataFax%20Modem%20Bulk) has a modem for $17 before shipping and handling.... and it is in stock!!!
After that, you just missed out on a good modem deal for <$30 at gearxs (http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/product_info.php?cPath=91&products_id=1357). Keep checking just in case.
I got the same modem from www.computergeks.com, (also out of stock but keep checking just in case) it runs great, if you can find any there.
TechIMO (http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77586&highlight=modem) thread which discussed that modem in good detail.
The actual manufacturer of the modem I purchased (mine is labeled as Prime Peripherals) is Amigo (http://www.amigo.com.tw/products/modem/ta96.htm).
But, those are all out of stock....
In comparison, this is really $$$ at $80, but it is a US Robotics (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=406088&Sku=U13-4064).

U.S. Robotics makes very good modems. Newegg has a V.92 external for $77 shipped. I think it's the same as the one dunbar linked to at TigerDirect.

I have this one (http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=5RJTAI-35500), works just fine in Linux as an external serial port modem.
I have one at home I don't want. I can post the specs and brand later, but it's a usb external softmodem.
