That is the Question for the newest Poll :)

I added a option, i would say not for 6 months, but i probably will if i get the money, and i have no idea what i would buy then.

I would likely go for AMD again, however i would make sure to get here some oppinions on each processor first.

I don't see a new system anywhere in the near future. I'm very well satisfied with my current system, and I think it'll last me at least a couple years before it's time to upgrade.

My current machine is a T-Bred B @ 2.175 GHz, 512MB Crucial Ram @ 378MHz, 260GB total HDD, All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV, TB Santa Cruz, 48x24x48x LiteOn, Pioneer 16x slot-load DVD, plus a few more goodies. :)

Well, now I've that I've sold my TigerMPX and the processors, I'm kinda leaning towards a P4 800FSB system....

I really wanted to do a dual xeon system but it's going wait for atleast 6 months

I think Da Boss's plan is to be minimalistic, once the building work has finished she is happy to have roaming laptops throughout!

I'd love to get a new P4 system, specially one with the new P4 extreme CPU!
But, I've spent a bit too much cash on my recent dual Xeon server, so the gaming PC upgrade will have to wait till Xmas! (fingers crossed)

I'm in the nothing for at least 6 months group also. I've continually updated this system from its AMD 1600xp beginning. Right now it's a 2400xp. If anything I'll be looking to upgrade my monitor next.

With BTX on it's way out and 64bit catching on, I think I'll just wait a while and see what develops. Perhaps next year I'll build something new for myself. :)

Have you read the reviews? The extra cache made no difference in the real world on 3D games or 3DMax, Maya, etc... It's all just a hype....

Right now, I'm slap happy with my 2.53ghz P4 and my 2.66ghz P4 lappy.

If I do upgrade it would be to a 3.X P4 on a springdale or canterwood board. I am anxiosly awaiting to hear about the new P5s (or whatever their name will be) that I'm starting to hear the buzz about. Anyone have any links to that?

I've read this review (http://www17.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030923/index.html) on Tom's Hardware. The P4 EE is way on top!

Thanks to its ideal configuration and use of the best components, the P4 3.2 in the Extreme Edition (actually a Xeon labeled 'P4') wins the performance crown. Its former gaming weakness against the Athlon 64 has been ironed out by the 2 MB L3 cache. The AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 is only marginally slower. Especially with 3D games, both the 1 MB L2 cache as well as the fast memory access (HyperTransport) help it decisively beat competitor Intel P4 3.2 (standard edition).

I know that The AMD is a 64bit chip and no benchmark test this but currently, there is no 64bit OS/apps available.

So far - not really satisfied - but willing to wait a little more.

All my rigs are under a ghz, So I will be moving a lightyear faster no matter what I do. But until I get so high speed connections up here in the frozen north, It makes no sense to have a faster rig. Just a waste.

And considering that I have been online on dailup since before 97/8 I figure that when I get reports of #@LL freezing over - I'll get a faster connection.

Cheers - Centurion

Not to burst your bubble or anything Stan, but Toms has often been called "Tom's Intelware", and not for no reason.

Here you go Stan!

Xeon 3.06Ghz Code named Madison with 6MB cache (http://inquirerinside.com/?article=7454) for a sweet price of $4,226 per processor! OMG! This will be the S.D.E.E! (Super Duper Extreme Edition) :D

Too late for that EndobioticChaos... NDC did burst it yesterday night...
You are both right... looks like this extra 1MB is definitely too much $$$ for the performance increase...

$4,226 for one CPU... ouch!!!!

Here is something you may want to read here. Looks like Tom isn't so Intelware this time..

Only thing I really like to have is a different notebook, at least a P II 450. with 8mb video ram is case I get bored at work so I can play Decsent :D

Nothing for at least 6 or maybe more months, however maybe a processor upgrade will satisfy the urge.

NDC

Yeah, I know what you mean about "the urge". Sometimes I need to go out an buy something, anything to keep me from spending big cash on something computer related. I seem to get the urge to buy something very often... LOL

AMD-64 definitely.........probably in about 2yrs is when ill upgrade though.

considering my 2500+ should last longer than that. hopefully.

NDC

AMD-64 is something I wouldn't jump on right away. I'm sure we're going to see many changes on the motherboard features, chipsets, etc as it gets more and more stabalized...

About the only thing I'd do to my system is an 800 FBS cpu and
PC 3200 ram.

well - for what its worth - it will be next year before I put money down on any system.

P4 + is probably going to be it

I'm waiting until AMD settles in on a Socket that they will keep for a while. If you had built a rig back when socket A first came out, you would have been able to upgrade for quite a while before it became obsolete. If you jump in with an FX chip, upgrading the chip on the same Mobo is out of the question. Hate to spend all that money and be locked in a year or 2 from now.

Until then, my XP2400 will have to do.

I agree with Rick. I'm waiting for 1) the socket to settle and 2) for MS to finish up there 64 bit windows. Why spend the money on a 64 bit system if you can run the OS on it? I suppose you coudl use a 64bit linux version though...

Shyguy
06-01-2004, 9:50 PM
I agree with both of you, but thats the advantage of getting a Athlon 64, you can still use 32 bit Windows with it as its both 32 & 64bit (the CPU).

I'm thinking of getting a regular AThlon 64 system down the road here before the end of the year, if they haven't changed the socket design of course, the standard 64's aren't that much slower than the FX's so I'd go with a 3200+ or 3400+ right now.

The 64 bit AMDs are enticing now that the newer ones have come out, but the XP2600+ Mobile is still far more attractive price/performance wise for me. The Mobile XP is what I'll be building with for the next couple of systems now.

Well,I'm good for a while with a twin 2.4 Xeon\U320 raid\1024 ram,3 twin AMD systems\U160 raid and a 3200 amd\U160 raid.
That and I'm converting most everything over to U2 scsi's.
My next one will be a probably be a single cpu setup. Not sure bout the 64's as there's not much of a gain for what I'm doing with them.

I still haven't upgraded since i made that first post, and i have no idea when i will, but i do know that i really want a new video card.
