Been thinking of setting up a Linux box. It will be my first attempt at this. Is RedHat 7.1 a good program? Saw a couple of boxed/sealed copies at a local Staples on clearance. Either $26 or $29. Is this a good price? Any other programs I should consider instead?
Thanks,

piman

Red Hat is a great dist. Has alot of support via the net too which is a big plus! While you can download load it for free I usually suggest that you buy a retail version the first time as you will normally get a couple of manuals which can be very helpful when first starting out in linux

If it's going to be your 1st attempt than I suggest Mandrake Linux 8.1. This seems to be the most popular and user-friendly Linux distro for beginners and for me it was easy to set up. Not only is it good for beginners but it works well for servers, workstations, etc. It even includes a gaming ed for those who are so inclined. ;)

Read the review I did on Mandrake Linux 8.1 HERE (http://www.xtremepccentral.com/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=9). That review will definitely help you out if you're new to Linux and want to set it up.

I'll check on some links for ya, but in the meantime hope this helps :)

Here's some threads you might want to read if you haven't already: HERE (http://www.xtremepccentral.com/vbforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=414&highlight=Linux) and to d/l a free version of Linux that will run straight from the CD (i.e. No setup required!) Mntsnow and jadison:
Thanks to you both for your input and the links. I'll have to mull over the info and decide which distro to go with.
