its my personal opinion that its probably dead, but I thought I'd see if ya'll had any ideas, it used to work (last used in early jan) but now (using any burning program, ancluding EZCD, Nero, NTI CD-maker, CDRwin, etc. under both 2k and XP) when you put in a blank disc it freezes the prog, taking the disc back out unfreezes it.

Have you tried uninstalling all of the burning progs and cleaning the registry and then reinstalling only ONE of the burning progs AFTER a complete reboot of the box? (I would first suspect corrupted drivers (aspi layer to name the main one). Usually most burning progs dont like to be installed with other burning progs on the same system. EZCD and Nero are known for having major problems with each other.

So basically prior to condeming the burner I would either try the burner in a different system or totally clean out the current multiple burning software and do a reinstall of just one application

I've tried it from a complete clean install on another hd, with only one prog installed (adaptec, same as I used when it used to work), both with and without aspi installed manually

...another HD on the same machine, or another HD on a different machine? If you installed it on the same machine, the drivers are still in the C:\WINDOWS folder...

1. Try moving the burner to a different IDE channel.

2. Try having only the burner on the same IDE cable, no secondary..

I swapped a differant hd into the same machine and formatted it, then installed.

Maybe the drive itself is a gonner. As for many CDRW drives such as my Plextor 8432, it freezez the computer for a split second while the drive reads the media information. It appears that, your drive may be having problems retrieving the needed data to display it's contents.. How old is this drive?

I really dont know how old it is, I acquired it used, theres probably a manufacture date on it somewhere, but I dont feel like looking at the moment, might tommorow
