ATI Radeon 8500

This speedy board hits the sweet spot with fine performance and a ton of hardware extras. The Radeon's image quality was well above average doing well in both games and other applications. In Unreal Tournament, the Radeon displayed fine contrast, subtle shadows, and bright colors in the game's murky hallways. The Radeon had high frame rates in MDK2, with 98 frames per second at 1024-by-768 resolution and 73 fps at 1600 by 1200. With the Radeon 8500's included dual 15-pin adapter, you can connect a TV and a monitor or a digital and an analog monitor. Plus, ATI bundles the first-person shooter game Half-Life: Counterstrike and DVD playback software.

ViewSonic GS790

A shallow case design and impressive graphics quality make the GS790 well suited for high-level imaging work in tight spaces. The 19-inch GS790 excelled at rendering graphics. Colors shone brightly, particularly in photos. With a depth of only 16.2 inches, it occupies much less desktop space than any other monitor its size. The comprehensive documentation for the ViewSonic GS790 covers all the basics and includes clear definitions of all on-screen controls.

QPS Que Internal 24x10x40x CD-RW Drive

This 24x10x40x CD-RW drive is a speedy choice for a reasonable price. It uses the same Sanyo drive mechanism as the TDK 24/10/40 VeloCD ReWriter, so it's not surprising that the Que Internal 24x10x40x CD-RW Drive performed nearly identically to the TDK on two tests (burning to CD-R on the fly and packet writing 100MB of files to CD-RW). The Que took a scant 1 second longer than the TDK when writing an image to CD-R, with a time of 4 minutes, 1 second. The drive ships with Ahead Nero Burning ROM 5.5 and InCD 2.23 CD mastering and packet writing software.
