View Full Version : Anyone Getting This Error On XP Pro?
Whenever I try to make a restore point, I get an error telling me "System restore is not able to create a restor point. Please Restart the system, and then run system restore again." I've tried restarting numerous times and no go... And yes, I have plenty of diskspace so it's not that...

Here's what I've tried so far but no luck...
* Renaming wininit.ini to wininit.xxx.
* Deleting wininit.ini.
* Scandisk
* Turning off System Restore and restarting the system and then enabling.
* Killing the System Restore Service and restarting it.
* Booting into Safe Mode and trying it.

how much space do you have allocated to system restore? maybe it's trying to use more then you have allowed it to use...
just a thought.
Yeah, I thought that also but... There's much more space available than is allocated for System Recovery... :(
I relied on system recovery when I first installed XP. I made some purpose restore points when I knew the system was stable. It let me down. I makes it's own points when it wants to and must have erased mine. So I gave up and went back to Drive Image pro.

try turning off system restore, delete the sys restore directory and then re-enable it again.
Tried that, but no go.... :(

Try this:
Go to services, system restore service, stopping it, changing the start up to manual instead of automatic, exit the services, then try to run a restore point without rebooting. Mine was giving a similar message until I did that.
Thanks for your reply, MrEd...
Yeah, I tried that as well... But no go. :(
I reinstalled XP and it was working fine for a while, and now the problem started up again. I've given up on using Windows XP Restore feature and disabled it. Now I just use Norton Ghost 2002 and build hard disk images and store them on a mobile disk....

NDC,
I'm not sure whether this will fix your prob or if you tried it, but it could be worth a go.
Goto Group Policy Editor\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Installer. There should be a setting there called "Turn off creation of System Retore Checkpoints". It should be set to "Not Configured" by default.
There is also a setting under Group Policy Editor\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\System Restore.
Hope it helps.

Ah, thanks, infinitii! :)
I just decide to dump XP's Restore features and disable it... Now I just have a compressed Ghost Image of all my systems on a single mobile rack hard disk drive... :)
