Gene, if you have to ask you're off to a bad start :) The most common ways of generating income from a website are from advertising (banner ads etc) and some kind of user service such as subscription access or sales.
A site like this one (xtremepc) doesn't generate that much income. It probably breaks even. Something like AnandTech generates more income but they have far more advertising, which is where their income comes from.
Sales sites are obvious, Amazon, JCrew etc. Their income is derived from product sales.
Service sites such as eBay provide a service others pay for in order to generate income.
I'm not discussing Pr0n sites.

A Bill is correct......Actually I currently lose money on XtremePcCentral. The few dollars I get from a couple of Ads that I run is a mere drop in the trashcan. The few XPC Premium members and XPC Email users help where without their help I probably would have off loaded XPC.
Truthfully I do XPC as I've enjoyed giving back to the internet community, I dont like sites with a ton of adverts so I figured I would have my own with only a couple and they are from places I personally support/use products/services from. It's been a great learning tool as I'm a much more of a hands on learner than a book learner. and last but not least I'm able to use XPC as a small tax shelter since I run it under my Mntsnow Custom Computers and that sideline business operates this site.
For me and a large majority of sites make it from:
#1 Main Income generation comes from Subscriptions/services offered.
#2 Income from Adverts (must be a very high traffic site as ads pay very little unless people actually buy something and then if they are running cookie blockers and such it's very likely you wont get "credit" for refering that person...)
#3 Income/support from vendors thru free or deeply discounted products/support services.
