I recently contacted Compaq support to see if my Presario 6015CA motherboard could handle the latest AMD processors and I received more conflicting information than I have ever experienced with a support service. I was told that my motherboard would hold all AMD cpus...then I was told just up to 2200+ and then I was told that it could allow for only a 2000+. One guy even told me that it won't support Barton cpus. I really need help in determining what AMD cpus can go in my system and what cpus can't.
My motherboard info: Compaq 07D0h 2H26KPWU7170
- It will probably be impossible to find any info on my board...heh.
If anyone can help that would be great.

I'm having trouble locating any documentation on that model of system....:(

Damn...I thought it would be hard to find it. I don't think it is even a brand name board. You could try looking for just the 6000 series instead of 6015CA; maybe they use the same board in all of the 6000 series Presarios.

They don't want you messing w/ there systems. So the more fud they spew the better.
Mr. C has worked on a lot of those things. He may be able to helps but his site is down right now. Try www.mrcs.us tomorrow sometime.

Compaq is the pits for upgrade support. They would rather sell you a new system than assist you in upgrading.
The thing to remember is - Compaq does not manufacture mainboards. They are made by different board makers. The primary one for years has been Mitac. I have had decent luck flashing Compaq mainboards to the latest Mitac bios for additional processor/hardware support. Do a search for Mitac and do a visual on their boards. Or, post a pic of your mainboard and I will try to ID it for you...:)

thank you very much for the help. I'll look around for mitac boards.
How do you go about flashing your bios?
MRCOMPUTER - if you could give your e-mail address I could send you some pics of my motherboard.

What's in it now? And who made the chipset? DDR ram or old SDRAM?

I'd guess that it won't run a Barton or Tbred. But, again there's no info out there on these things. Nobody ever trys em.
Pallys only go up to 2100+ and it's not much of an increase. I'd sit where you're at for now. It's must be a nice stable lil' system, eh?
Does it have an AGP slot?

Yup. its a pretty good little rig I guess. I have a geforce ti 4200 128mb clocked past 4600 in there so I'm pretty happy with it. I just hate companies that give poor support.

Yea, I hear ya. I was gonna suggest just sticking a new vid card in, but you already have a goodun.
If Mr. C finds out that it'll run a Tbred or Barton, then I'd say yea, "upgrade." But, I wouldn't count on it.

That was a good guess on your part Bruno.
None of the info at Mitac suggests it will.
Heres the "If I were you" part-
If you get to the point where you really want to upgrade - You can pick up a micro atx board at New Egg for a decent price.
Get one with an agp slot and give your Compaq a boost...:)

I'd just like to say that it's great (for a change) to talk to people that actually know alot about computer hardware. Thanks for the help guys.

You are Welcome!
When you get ready for a new board - ask again.
We will try to give you some decent options...:)
