well most of you have probly heard of cnet(downloads.com) im on a cable connection it says i have 700 down but i got this download app made by cnet and i download off http servers at 1.5 megs...but then on t1 connections (ftp or mirc) friends with vids of my band i max out at 280kb download
Also it says my upload is 128kb when i send files i max at 40 and the past few days im getting like 10 at the most anyone tell me why?
more worried about the http downloading so fast though is there anyway to make mirc transfer at these rates?

The software you downloaded from CNET uses a compression alogrythm that when you download stuff from their site or affiliates you get the impression its actully faster, in reality it isnt. Its comparable to an uncompressed file and a zip file.
Your download speed is capped by your ISP so if you signed up for 512kbps connection then you will only download at that speed not 1mbps.
AFAIK anyways :)

it works on all sites not just cnet and aff. it lets me get that speed on almost every website and on others its a little slower somtimes around like 700.
Are you possible confusing Kb/sec connection speed with KB/sec?
Remember 8Kb=1KB.
The difference between bits and bytes, one byte is 8 bits of data.
So, after encapsulation of each packet of data (encapsulation is the process of adding headers and markers about what peice of data each packet of data is a part of) you gain about 10-20% data size...combine that with the 1/8 conversion, you will likely see real downloads at about 1/9 of the connection bit rate.
In otherwords, 250-300KB/sec is perfectly normal for a 1.5 Mb/sec connection and 30-50KB/sec is normal for a 256Kb/sec connection.

I max out at 928Kb/sec on a tester, but...
In reality that is about 116KB/sec.
My actual download max has been 380KB/sec on a Netgear 10/100/1000 card. My highest on the onboard LAN has been around 290.
I dislike the tester because it was showing me to have an enormous download speed but in all actuality, it isn't so.

Try Zeroads, I'm using it. It speeds up my internet connection by getting rid of pop-ups. When I downloaded it, I was after the blocking functions, but it proves to be more than just a pop-up blocker.
You can try it first to see if it works well with your system. They have free 15-day trial in their website. www.zeroads.com Check this one out. See how cool the dashboard looks. I like it a lot.

BBA- what would the average KB\sec be for a 2Mb connection?
I went to DSL reports (now Broadband reports) tried the speed test, used a speakeasy server from St. Cloud, MN (50miles away), & this is the ruslts I got, well below the supposed 2Megabit connection we signed up for through Charter.
2004-01-24 03:31:12 EST: 366 / 116
Your download speed : 366161 bps, or 366 kbps.
A 44.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 116465 bps, or 116 kbps.
Pretty D*** pathetic if you ask me.

upload is about right, but download?

that sounds pretty average for a cable/dsl connection. what kind is yours? if you have cable, you do realise you are sharing the bandwidth with everyone one the node your on, right?
Sounds pretty low for DSL but pretty average for cable during peak ueage times.
Mine usually come in at 1.5Mb/sec all the time but I have DSL

Cable, But that test was at 2:30 in the morning, a year ago when I had the internet (cable & 1.5Mb) I got at least 2-3 times that. The thing that sucks around here is that the people who have trouble with their cable internet speeds are almost always ones who are too far away from the main offices or lines of the DSL providers in the area, thus we can't get DSL, otherwise we would.

Have you thought about checking your cable modem? Maybe getting a faster one?
Personally, I don't go by what the "sites" say. The reason is that you could consider your speed, but what about the speed of the site that is doing the testing. How accurate is it and what kind of bandwidth reserves do they have specifically for these "tests"? If a lot of users are doing tests and they have other traffic, you will have a lower "score" considering everything (including throughput). What I would do is (if you want to get a feel for your speed), is to try 2-3 sites, each at a different time of day. Take those numbers and average them. That should show a closer-to-accurate picture.

Actually I did, around 11 this morning I tried a server from minneapolis, 100 miles away & got about the same result, around 360k (kilobit) per second. The really pathetic thing is that around here charters lowest speed offered is 384k\s (used to be 128, then 256, now 384). As far as modem goes we just bought a brand new one a week before we got reconnected (D-Link DI-704), ooop's thats the model # of my router, the modem is a D-Link DCM-201, instead of using charters POS.
EDIT: I just tried a server in San Francisco & got about 378k
I also just tried a server in London, UK, this is what I got:
Direction Actual Speed True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 358 Kbps (44.8 KB/sec) 386 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 122 Kbps (15.3 KB/sec) 131 Kbps (inc. overheads)
