I have a wav file that I have set up for "new mail notification" It's too darn loud, it scares the crap outta me!
What "free" app can I use to turn it down and resave it with?
TIA
Brian

If you have a creative soundblaster card, SB16 or higher, you can install a program called WaveEdit off the installation cd, it's normally not installed.

try this program too, Cool Edit 2000 (http://www.syntrillium.com/cooledit/). However i'm not sure how the trial version is limited.

I got it. Duh.... I used the built in sound recorder.
Much better now. I'll probably live longer too........:p

go take a look at http:://www.nonags.com and do a search in their freeware section for wav editors. There are dozens of them out there and many of the best are free.

Most of them were created by MP3 people who converted to wav to hack out some of those annoying musical pre-ambles some artists insist on maring otherwise good work with ......

That is how I did it.
NDC how did you add that image? Copy it and paste to paint, and then crop it, convert it to jpg and up it?
Or is there an easier way?

Sound recorder is great for short files, doesn't it have like a one or two minute limit?

Yep, I just pressed PrintScreen, opened Photoshop, cropped it, pressed "save for the web", selected GIF, and then attached the file to the reply.

The nice thing about Xtreme PC Central Forums is that when we attach an image file, they don't show as a hyperlink, it shows the image as if you used the [img] tags. Best part? We don't have to upload to a different server! It's all saved to the Xtreme server! :jump:
