lagging connection - dail up

here is what I am running

amd750 - chiantech 7ata - slot a athalon -
256meg ram
geforce nvidia video - 64 meg
v90 hard modme set to pnp

when connected it shows 57.6 speed

a w2k box that was here consistently showed 46.6 to 48 k speed

when I am doing a download - and nothing else running - I get downloads of 1.5 to 4k for a speed.

mntsnows tester on the front page showed 40.0k

so the question is - how do i get to this speed for downloads and the like when I think I never get them now!

I run ZA latest - and webtrap from trend.

my home machine is faster in response - and at 26.4 dialup --

the amd takes 15 to 30 seconds to respond to each mouse click!

Update - Harddrive was going west - creating constant reboots - doing diagnosis on it now - seems that the factory defualt pin connections are the only ones that will work - master and slave came up HDD not found - thanks- wiz

Thanks for the update Wiz. sounds like maybe since the HD was dieing that it couldnt write to the drive if I read your reply correctly? Where you getting any read or write errors?
