hooking up a external audio device through SBL 5.1

Im having a problem making me sound system work through my computer. i have cable go from the digital out plug to the red and white R & L Plugs on the black of my sterio. i can get sound through the system but it is realy distorted and i have to turn the sterio turned way up, the sound is realy static and muted sounding. i would like to know what i can do to get me system to work better:confused:

If I'm understanding what you wrote correctly you are connecting the Digital OUT to a Analog IN. You would be better of using a digital to digital or analog to analog connection. What type of Inputs are avalible on your stereo? RCA, Fiber-Optic, Digital?
