Tanaiste Mary Harney announced on Tuesday that Enterprise Ireland contributed, in the first three months of 2003, to this investment, which is going towards R&D as well as sales and marketing, including the development of the companies' overseas marketing efforts.

Six of the ten companies are based outside Dublin, which the Tanaiste said was good for regional development. "The advanced technology based orientation of these regionally based companies is particularly encouraging," she commented.

The news comes as bright spot in Ireland's jobs scene, as wave after wave of job cutting announcements has decimated parts of the country. Since January, the likes of Flextronics, NewWorldIQ, Riverdeep, Lucent, Celestica, MSL and e-learning firm Unlimited have collectively shed, or plan to shed, hundreds of jobs. Some industry groups, such as the Small Firms Association, reckon that over 12,000 jobs have been lost in Ireland so far this year.
