Welcome to XPC Trust. I would recommend using BulletProof FTP Server (not free but has a free 30 trial and very inexpensive to buy) It's very easy to setup and configure.

If you have XP Pro or 2000 Pro install IIS and you are off and running. I really like ServU FTP Server

I don't think IIS is very easy to use, and lik emost MS software, you have to patch it up. I use bulletproof, and have been using it for 4 or 5 years).

I would also recommend bulletproof FTP.... Very easy to setup in my opinion...

Use IIS it's a free application if you already have the Windows OS.

So you have to invest some time into securing your OS and the application (which you would have to do anyway) and you will have to learn the software (which you would have to do anyway).

So BulletProof is very exspensive when compared to free. It has a learning curve and you must run it on a OS which has to be patched and secured.

So I ask what are it's merits over IIS FTP?

Well for one it's a stand alone application thus when it hangs (which doesnt happen very often) it doesnt lock up other OS applications, The ability to create users that have full and complete control of the files under their account without creating them an account on the system. the ability to move and restore accounts without having to manually set them up and a few others. for me the admininstation side of running bulletproof over IIS is a great time saver.

My point was that for someone that has to ask "what is IIS" -

They should start off learning the programs native to the OS. Then after they have learned what features they like and need they can delve into 3rd party applications. Only then can buy a product that meets their needs.

I find it just as easy to open user manager and create/modify accounts as I would using BPFTP admin tools and couldn't justify the cost.

Applications that hang and take other apps and/or the OS with them - That is a problem inherent of the underlying OS - read shared memory vs protected memory.

Thats one of the beauties of softwares...There is pretty much something that will fits someones specific needs to a T and so forth :)
