Morning all - looking at the back of the laptop harddrive.
................. ..
....... ......... .. <<kinda looks like this
where is pin 1 - ? I am trying to use an adapter for the pluggin to a standard ide cable - but do not wish to put voltage where it should not be ..
The adapter is not notched - or blocked in any way - so I am trying to sort which way it goes first - not after its fried.
Cheers - C

good luck. I fried to lappy drives { 1 gigers } and one PC drive { 5 gig } trying to figure out how to hook up those lappy to desktop drive converters. I hate it that they come with no instructions at all.

Gotcha covered. The converters cover only the main group of pins, NOT the 4 separate pins at the end. Those pins are for master/slave/cable select configuration.
Pin 1 is located top right, with the 4 pins further right. Like this:
PIN 1 > O OO
O OO
For master leave pins unjumpered.
For slave
PIN 1 > O O|
O O|
jumper vertically on end.
For cable select:
PIN 1 >O OO
O ---
jumper horizontally across the bottom 2 pins.
This should clarify matters.
Doesn't display right.

Exactly. I've used the adapters many time as well. Better adapters actually have the complete sockets with block offs for the unoccupied pins and standard sized jumpers for the M/S/CS jumpers.
