I'm sure this is a simple task, but for some reason, I periodically run into this when fixing or setting up pc's.
Usually after setting up and getting the network going, IE (if internet is available to network) has no problem accessing the internet. But periodically, I seem to have a heck of a time getting IE to access the internet, even though the network works fine and other pc's access with no issue. This isn't OS specific, and yes i've double checked settings and even tried connection wizard. Most recently....windows nt 4.0.

Any Help would be deeply appreciated.

Well with w98/w95 I had various measures of success - somtimes it worked - sometimes not.

W98se and the ICS - I found to be a real pain if the setting go buggered - and as well - I had someone helping me by going to really unsafe sites - and then wondering what they had done when they had a 100 windows popping onscreen and the machine was dead. [looooooong story]

with w2k and xp have been better - I have not used NT4 - well at least as anything more than an experiment.

C

ps - are you setting nt4 to host the net? that is it is the gateway for your net to the world. and can you ping your nt4 from your other boxes when you have this problem?

Sorry - just thought of something - does your tcp/ip network go down when you have this problem, maybe your net cards are intermitent? I have had this with a couple of 3com509 cards. A hammer fixed them.

Good nfo...but all other pc's can access internet and the network, while the one, only can access the network.

A standard router is used...all visible settings are the same(as far as i can tell) on all pc's.

Gun, I've been having the same issue.
I did find out that to connect via my network that the most effective way is to cycle my cable modem & my router at the same time.
If I don't it seems that the router (a d-link btw) won't recognize the new pc & will innevitably throw junk to the modem & if I don't cycle both at the same time I'm just wasting time.
Don't know if I've explained this worth a dam, but it's seemed to have helped me.
Good luck. ;)

Have you made sure you do not have internet explorer socket hijacking spyware (like new.net) installed? Have you used adaware to remove hidden spyware? Have you used lspfix to repair damaged or misrouted socket layers?

Before replacing hardware, I would at the least recommend running adaware and lspfix.

BBA what do you mean by the IE socket being hijacked? Sounds to these guys they have the same problem as me. (windows XP)
Im with comcast cable and i am ruling my problems to either

1. crappy modem (power plug in on back of cable modem is loose and will not be snug no more)

2. crappy service.

Im been having huge issues with my connection as well. and Like Centrion says, he can't access the interent just like me. All lights will be flashing in proper order and no net access. I have done wahat you have suggested. i am constantly powercycleing and reseting my modem. (up to like 30times a day)

so it will be intersting to see what ya all find out. I have ran adware and other detecting software and my machine is CLEAN.

WHat I mean is there is a socket layer between TCP/IP and Internet explorer, which is basically the software that connects the two so browsing is possible.

A lot of spyware will create a route out of your computer via tcp/ip to their own server to monitor all your packets then back to your computer as a link in the socket chain between your computer and tcp/ip. New.net is the most famous for this, but others do it as well.

The problem is when new.net or a connection between you and them do not communicate well, you experience slow to non-existant internet browsing.

Adaware is the application I like that will search for any such software (as long as it is in the adaware database/definition files) and removes it. Get it at http://www.lavasoft.de

As for the socket layer, well...an unsucessful removal of an application using socket layer interception will result in a break in the chain and can render internet explorer useless.

Thanks to lspfix, you can repair a broken socket layer or remove a socket layer that does not belong there. Get LSPfix from here:
