View Full Version : Creating a Subdomain
Hi all, I am trying to create a subdomain so I can host a site for my friend but, I can't figure out how to do it. I am using IIS 6 on Windows Enterprise Server 2003 and Zone Edit for my DNS. I would rather use my own DNS but, I don't know how to set it up.
If anyone knows how to please let me know. Thanks.

Well since I do know a little bit of the background I will mention that you wont be able to effectively run a DNS server since you have a dynamic IP and the Domain registrars wont allow DNS servers to be registered that are not on Static IPs cause it creates BIG problems with reverse lookups. so your stuck with using Zoneedit or a 3rd party dns provider.
What you need to do is first create at Zoneedit another "A" record (Host record) for the subdomain. Create one just like you did for "www" cause "subdomain" is the same thing as "www" .... See this Tutorial http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-zoneedit-subdomain.html
Next you need to setup and configure HOSTHEADERS for in your IIS manager. so see this tutorial http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-w2k-subdomain.html and if you want a website to answer to multiple queries see this tutorial http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-w2k-vir-server.html
Lastly if you have problems and feel like setting up and account for me I would be more than willing to log in remotely to your server and configuring it for you.
Well, I have did that before and I couldn't get it to work properly. I don't know how to setup the remote login but, if you want I could use Netmeeting.
Well, why exactly would it matter that I am on Dynamic and run my own? The IP address hasn't changed in almost a year. Ever since I got my router it hasn't changed and I leave my computer on 24/7 as well as my other one.

The reason that Dynamic IPs are not supposed to be used for dns is REVERSE lookups. What would happen is if a reverse query is peformed it might end up pointing to the wrong place since the requested server might not be actually at that IP any more. Thus it creates a bunch more traffic because of the failure notification packets and the re-requests ect.
Would you be willing to help me configure my server through M$ Netmeeting? I just have stressed myself out trying to figure it out.

I cant run Netmeeting due to my firewalls. Sorry
Well, how can I set it up then? I mean as I said above I have stressed myself out trying to.

First you will need to create a User account for me on your server (I assume you know how to do that and make sure you give my user account admin privs as admin privs are needed for the configuration changes to work....If you dont know how to create a user account let me know and we can walk you thru that too ;))
Then To setup Remote Desktop is very easy.......Right click on the "MyComputer" icon and choose "properties" and then click on the "Remote" tab. Then place a checkmark in the "remote desktop" section and then click on "select Remote Users" and add in the account you just created for me and when we are done you can remove my account and leaving just yours just to be safe ;)
Then email/pm me your IP address to your server and the username and password you created for me and let me know when your ready for me to take a look.
NOTE: You will need to open/forward TCP port 3389 to the ip of your server if your running a firewall/router
