Now - trust me as I have always had a problem getting a tcp/ip network running - wizards are great except when they don't.

lappy - running win98se - laptop cut down install - pcmcia socket services are running and show no problems - under netbuei this did not work - so I am goning back to tcp/ip

ip addy is the usual - 192.168.0.3 for this no modem 'd machine - no updates - as I do not wish to get it running online if possible.

I set the shares up on the drives and set the wanting to give access to my files and printers. and reboot -

What I get when done - and this is under buei or tcp is: I double click "Net nieghbors" and it gives me the entire network icon - but when I click it - it gives a message of unable to browse the net - open your trouble shooter to drive yourself nuts.

When I alt click the net neighbor - and go looking for the machine by name - it appears and gives me the drives.

In a dos prompt - ping does not lose its messages -

But when I try to get the box form the net neighbor - no fun.

PS - cross over cable - nothing else - same workgroup - same protocols - same everything.

PPS - subnet masks set to 255.255.255.0

what I think i need is to find a way to test this little pcmcia networkcard - or point me to a step by step method of setting this up.

netbuei has always been my default install - just because its fast and a no brainer - but I really need this sorted out - to ghost off this machine as well?

Centurion - thanks for reading - a larger thanks for ideas.

Which other OS(s) are in use on your network? have you confirmed that ONLY one machine is configured to be the "master browser"?

I will probably have other suggestions once knowing what the OS(s) are on the other machines. btw do the other machines have problems networking?

Hi - and thanks - the main box is my tried and true AMD - running win98se. It is patched with as many as MS says it needed so far.

I forget its ip addy but it is consistent with the usual numbers.

of the top of my head - I set the lappy not to be the "master"

I am on my way home soon to plug it in and see how it runs tonight.

thanks
