I have front page 2002 server ex running on iis 5. Everything is going very well thanks to this site. I am having problems inserting a hit counter. The counter shows up but stays on 1. It also seems to slow the page down.
I have this same problem on a site I have hosted somewhere else. I have 2 sites one works fine (hit counter) the other hangs. I created the site with fp2000 then upgrated to 2002. One site gave me problems and the other is great!
My goal it to host my sites when my lease is up. I am trying to work out all bugs and problems.
Any ideas?

usually that is a permissions problem that I have seen in the past. the counter has to be able to write to the _private folder so make sure that the IUSR accounts have permissions to modify that folders contents which would normally be _private/default.htm.cnt or _private/index.htm.cnt depending on if you use "default" or "index" as your homepage
Hope that helps

How do I see if the permissions are correct? My site folders do have _private/index.htm.cnt in hidden folders. I found them.
Thanks Mntsnow!

The easiest thing to first do is to go into your IIS manager and then right click on your website and choose 'Tasks" and then click on "check frontpage extendstions" or something to that effect (not logged into one of my server to verify the exact wording) and after doing that you can click on "recalculate" then see if that fixed it. If not then we can go into deeper troubleshooting

nothing has changed!
It also says admin program and server ext. are not compatible. The program is too old. ( something like that )

Did you first uninstall the 2000 versions?

no, so I need to uninstall via the control panel/add remove programs....than install version 2002......

Thats the best thing to do as your most likely having a version conflict and then install 2002 server exts and then choose to only configure 2002 server extends....also take note that you the main configuration of 2002 server exts via the admin web interface rather than the IIS MMC console
then have the 2002 exts "check" your website and then "recalculate" it. Then your counter should start working again. (you might have to delete your counter and start over on it if it got totally wacked)

After the uninstall, do I need to reboot?

Shouldnt be required if memory serves me right but It wouldnt hurt if you can have a reboot....also pull down any MS updates that you havent applied since your thinking of doing a reboot...that way you can get it all done :)

OK I uninstalled 2000, and 2002. Did a reboot, and installed a fresh copy of server extensions 2002. The admin page opened and all of my sites that I am hosting say extend in blue letters like a link. I checked my sites from another computer and all is normal (no errors) Now I need to configure them I guess. Now what is the next step?

Have you extended the exts to the websites yet? If not thats what you need to do :) (this will create a seperate admin page for each site that you extend the exts too)

Here's where I stand now, I extended the website from the admin page, then checked it out from a different computer. It seemed to do the trick, the page loaded quick and the counter counted! But it messed up the theme. So I fixed the site and now back to square one. I tried to remove the theme and no go, counter still won't work. What a hassle the little counter is becomming!
