Well with Chel & I getting some new laptops I finally broke down and setup a wireless access point at home. Went with the SMC 7004VWBR router (8011b) & 2 SMC 2632W pcmcia NICs for the laptops.

After a little bit of trouble I seem to have it up and running pretty smoothly and is great for surfing and small file transfers. It seems to have pretty good range as I can connect anywhere in home and pretty much anywhere in the yard but nowhere near the range that they say you could (just like everything else it's listed as "Upto" ) Well I have a neighbor that would love to get connected with my network but his house is just to far for the existing range but well within the "Upto" range so we might look into a couple of directional antenna's to see if that would get him connected (then he can help pay for my bandwidth! ;))

Anyone else using Wireless? What do you know about add-on antennas?

Why don't you try making a Yagi outa a pringles can (http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448) or something.

You can also extend your WAP antenna range with this simple design (http://osiris.urbanna.net/antenna_designs/projects/template/). Might be enough to reach next door. And cheap! :D

Cheers

Nice, I've been planning on a wireless access point for a while now. I think I'll do it after I close on my new house since right now in my present house I have lan ports everywhere I use any computer at.

I've been going to wireless access security seminars and playing with it a little...which simply makes the decision harder now that I know all the things I have to consider.
