i have my system connected to a d-link di-604 router with dsl.

when i am gone from my system for any length of time i have to reboot my system to get my connection back.

i went to the d-link faq and upgraded the firmware.

then i followed the directions that were for connecting using earthlink or any pppoe.

and still that didn't resolve my problem.

running winxp pro and zone alarm.

what setting am i missing?

Are you using static IP's for your computers or are you using the builtin DHCP server of the Dlink?

Is it your COMPUTERS or the DLINK that is losing the connection? just trying to get it straight in my head I'm taking it that the COMPUTER is whats losing the connection since you mentioned having to reboot the "system" where I would think you would say "router" if it was the Dlink....How do you have the lease time configured in the dlink? can you disable the lease time or increase it to like 30 days?

In the future instead of rebooting just open up a command prompt and type (assuming your using 2k or XP)

ipcofig /release and hit enter and then type
ipconfig /renew and then hit enter

this will cause the computer to contact the router and renew it's IP lease.

If using 9x or ME type winipcfg at the run line and from the gui utility you can release and renew

the longest lease time is 1 week. and there is no disable choice.

thanks for the information on the release/renew.

at least this way i don't have to keep restarting my system.

i don't think its the router because when i check the status it always shows that it is connected.

so it is my computer that keeps losing the connection.

the only thing that has me confused about this is why can i surf this site(i can move around at xtreme/post threads/reply to threads) but i can't get to any other web sites.

and when i click on links that are posted here they won't open.

Thats very interesting Robin.... How do you have your security permissions setup in your browser? (assuming IE)

let me first ask this. If you launch a new browser window and THEN choose a different site from your favorites does it work and go to that site? but when you click on a link from within a page (here or otherwise) does it not launch a new window or does the other site just not load?

when i try to connect to a site from my favorites the site does not open.

if i open another browser and try to connect from my favorites it doesn't open.

i can only open if i keep this site up and then i can browse around this site only.

if i click on a link within this site it doesn't open.

i hope i am explaining this clearly.

That is very interesting......The only way to truthfully determine what is wrong is to go into your browsers security options and reset them to defaults. Then reboot the system. (just write down your settings before changing). All I can think is that you have disabled "internet" and might have XPC placed in your trusted zone or something.

don't you just love a good mystery?:)

i never made any changes to ie and i didn't put anything in trusted zones.

i connected my system that is running win2k pro and left it unatteded for about 3 hours and it connected right up.

the only difference between the two systems is:

win2k pro/winxp pro
no avg/avg

on the winxp box something about spooling and some messager keep popping up with zone alarm and i don't allow access.

would one of those cause me not to keep a connection?

Just another thought to toss in,
Would there be any chance that you have the XP built in firewall disabling your internet port? Im just not wondering if the zone alarm/router and XP firewall is not creating a glich for you and somehow like MntSnow said xpc is your trusted site unless of course you have it set to be able to browse this site offline.

What exactly are the pop up messages from ZA?

well don't know if the mystery is solved, but i did like Mntsnow suggested and went and hit the default setting and now it connects just fine.

i also went into zone alarm and set the internet zone from high to medium.

thanks for all the suggestions and help.

BTW Mntsnow---i tried the refresh and renew ip before i did the default setting and it didn't work.

i still had to reboot system.
