audio hardware help

friend of mine is looking for a sound card with multiple inputs/channels that they can use when recording for their band. any ideas on where to start looking? i told him buying a multichannel mixer would be cheaper and use the PC to record, but they want to edit the sound on the PC itself in each channel.

well alot of guys use macs for that..ie moby and BT...thats all i know about it tho...sorry

i forgot, when i worked at a recording studio, we used a patch board and a soundblaster to record the waves and then edit them on the PC, but that was like 5 years ago.
