When I try to install Windows XP Professional(in NTFS) on a separate partition with Windows 98se installed on the same primary physical hard drive, install tells me that C:\(on which windows 98se is installed and not the intended partition for the os install) is corrupt. The hard drive is configured on a Promise ATA100(integrated on the motherboard) using the latest win2k or winnt drivers whichever was acknowledged by the install prog.
I'm using as follows:
AMD Athlon 1000
asus a7v kt133 with 512 pc133(1x256 2x128)
asus agp v???? (Gforce 2 mx400 with dvi 32MB)
Creative Labs Live EAX soundcard
That is much is much detail I can provide. Any response is appreciated!

boot back into Win98 or do this from a boot disk. Run Scandisk and check for errors. you might even do a fdisk /mbr with your win98 bootdisk. then after doing that and after it fixes the errors or after you have rewritten the mbr (master boot record) you can then relaunch the xp install and let us know how it comes along. if it errors out pay attention to the actual error code that it should list as well as that will help us.

The result is the same if I do it on a "wiped" and a fresh mbr, with even motherboard antivirus firmware switched to off, pnp os switched on and off via bios. During install, the drivers for the onboard pci Promise ATA100 drivers were used from both manufacturer and Microsoft on separate instances, and the format selection either at a quick, full, and intact setting for the partition. The install gave no specific error code except stating that it is corrupted and reboots. The hard drive already had been scanned and errors fixed via windows 98. The hard drive I'm using for the install is a Maxtor 40.0 GB 7200 rpm(listed as Maxtor 5 4098u8)
