View Full Version : Killed one of my processors on the dual MP2000! :(

I accidently kicked the system which is under my desk in the office and the system just went black. I rebooted the system and no go. I ended up taking the mobo out of the case and testing each processor as well as the sockets and it turns out the shock to the case killed one of the modded XP2000 chips.

Well, I just ordered a MP2000 from Wintec and guess what? The system still won't boot. I have a good feeling it has to do with the one of the processors being a MP and the other processor modded tp an MP from XP. At system post, the details displayed for each pocessor is completely different.

Looks like I will either need to get another XP2000 or an MP2000 chip to get this running SMP mode.. :(

awww man! :( you had to wait for them to reship it only to find out it doesn't work anyway! :p

are you gonna get both chips and try to mod an XP first?

I will probably end up getting another MP2000 and throwing the MP2000's on my home system and slap the modded XP1800's to the office system....

Oh, trust me. I would rather have the system perfect the way it was before I kicked the system.... *sigh*

Ouch.

My mom was so pissed 1 time that she hitted the case so hard that her hard drive totally crashed, hard drive gone, and all the info gone.

Better not get your mom in those kind of moods again! :D

That reminds me of when my mom was angry one time when I was in 8th grade, she bashed the front panel of my Honda Elite 150..

What kind of motherboard do you have.
I only have the won't boot if one of the 2 procs is an unmodded XP. The 2460 Tyan. All my other boards will boot reguardless of combination. If the mod is not working they will just run in uniproc mode.

That must have been some kick. If your heat sinks are large then I supposed one could have unseated.

By the way. 102 dollars will get an MP2000 shipped from newegg:
Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=343&manufactory=1028&Type=Refurbish&sortby=14&order=1)

It's a Tyan S2466N-4M (Tiger MPX). And the heatsinks are huge on this sucker. They are Thermatake Vocano heatsinks.

I'm familiar with the big volcanos. They are a little scary but my 7s and 9s cool pretty good.

If the procs run indivually in this board but won't post with both it just means the L5 mod went bad. It has happened to me during some proc switching.
Redo the mod and retry.

Acutally, I've already checked the L5 using a loupe and just to be sure, i redid it too and the processor was bad. It wouldn't even post on another system...

Thats a shame. Hopefully you didn't pay to much for the XPs. That's one reason I don't have many actual MPs. If I damage an XP I'm not out much money.

I have been watching for the tbred XP1700s on newegg for $30 shipped refurb. They clock easily to 1760 mhz and are cooler than the palaminos.

I coulldn't afford Xeons to replce my Athlons if I wanted to.

Well, I have some more bad news.. I bought an AMD MP2000+ at Wintec which is one of our distributors and this MP2000+ chip has transistor blocks at the top of the chip next to the core. I bought another MP2000+ at Fry's Electronics and these have transistors at the bottom the chip. These are the newer designs and these two chips will not work togther. The system won't boot. Looks like I will need to return the processor from Wintec and buy two MP2000s at Fry's which are the new designs...

Interesting...Is there anything saying this at AMD?

The second chip sounds like a Thourobred. I haven't tried to mix the palaminos but I didn't figure them to mix well.
Get another Tbred core and they'll clock better and run a little cooler.

Finally got the MP2000 duallie up and going again. These MP chips run about 6c cooler than the XP1800s because these are at 1.6v vs. 1.75 on the XP1800s...

Way to go. No kicking, slapping, or talking mean to your computer.
Have fun.
