ok hi everyone, im a newb here lol.....

anyways, i have a question....

i'm planning on buying a Linksys Wireless router w/ 4 port switch....$100
also, i'm getting a PCI wireless card for my comp in the other room....$80

that way, the setup will be:

Internet--> Cable Modem --> Linksys router....

then, one CAT5 cable to computer near modem, one wireless in other room.....

sounds okay,
i went surfing the net and found out that my ISP, AT&T Broadband, only will let the specific PCI card installed in this comp mear modem connect to the Net.....is this a bunch of crap???

when i DO get the router and PCI card in another week or two, can i configure my router to assign private IP's to my networked comps and let AT&T still assign the public IP for the router???

i've heard of people doing this with no problems, i'm just wondering if it works....

also, i'll probably either need to search the net for stuff about wireless security and how to turn off broadcasting etc etc etc, or, i can come here and ask u guys lol.....

sorry, im a gamer, not too familiar with networking stuff....and yea i know, wireless won't be as fast as a regular CAT5 cable, but hey, i'm too lazy to run a 150-ft cord allllll the way across the house.....

thanks in advance,

Some ISP's look at the MAC so it's possible that they are "looking" for that particular card. However, some homeowner type routers allow you to assign your MAC address to the router. You miight want to read the online documentation for the router you're planning to use and see about that. If so, spoof your MAC and have at it.

The LinkSys does DHCP so it'll assign IP's if you tell it to and it'll take whatever IP ATT&T assigns it or you can assign it a static IP if you have one. Never use a static IP on a DHCP network, it upsets people in charge ;)

Wireless security is going to be your big thing. Everything else is a cake walk. On the NOT wireless SMC unit I am using I have the option to allow only certain MAC addresses to get IPs from the unit. Most likely you can do the same or similar with the wireless unit you're getting.

Good luck with your project.

Check the price for the linksys wireless router w/ 4 port switch at buy.com. I got one for $80.00 and free shipping a few weeks ago.
