Bought a WD 80GB special ed. 8MB cache drive on 4/24/2003. Get home from work today and have a bios error (can't find boot device). uh oh. reboot machine and it seems to be booting okay. until it gets to the win2k chkdsk.
I start to hear this high pitch whine. heard it a few days ago and thought it was a fan starting to go out. put my ear down to the HD rack and lo-and-behold. its my new WD harddrive screaming at me.
GRRRR
Luckily I think I still have time left at best buy to return it, but because its shot I can't make a ghost image off it. Looks like I am making a trip to best buy tomorrow. maybe they will have a 120gb on sale or something ;)

DOH :( I hate it when they die so young! but then again I would rather them die really young so you can deal with the RMA on the local level.
Sorry to hear of the pending headaches of a reinstall paul :(
Yeah, sorry to hear that... It's a good thing it hasn't been too long before this happened. I've been XTREMELY LUCKY. I haven't had a single bad drive go bad on me (other than theone I dropped from my car roof to the ground). However, I have one that CLANKS at power up from time to time. I think this one is going soon but hasn't for about a year. Still runs with no bad sectors. Just needs a power down and re-power up and it runs fine so far....

Arrgh, that's about the worst sound in the world :(
Bad luck Soopastar
Luckily like NDC I have not had a drive gone bad on me but a mate of mine has a drive which is begining to sound unhealthy, buts its old and so to be expected.
Have fun with the reinstall ;)

replaced it last night with a maxtor 120GB 8mb cache model. i'm starting to loose faith in WD. I've had more of their drives fail than my maxtors. Only downside is the maxtor special ed. only has a 1 year warranty.
Now that machine has 220GB :) What am I going to do with all this space?!
