I downloaded Bulletproof server eval. to try. My goal is for people to ftp from FrontPage to my server (as I stated in other post)
I created a user and gave it a name and password. Gave it a dir to go to . I got this message in red .
4/28/2003 10:06:25 AM SERVER: Unable to start server, port 21 may already be in use.
Any ideas?
Thanks as always
Brian

You need to UNINSTALL the built-in FTP service that is in IIS....Go to Add-Remove programs and then click on "add-remove window componants" and then the IIS section and UNCHECK the FTP part. then Reboot the server. That should free up the port 21 :)

That was easy! After that last thread, this only took one reply to accomplish my goal. Thank you so much Mntsnow, Keith, and everyone who has helped me out.
I'll be around!

I've been using BFTP for about 4+ years now (when it was G6 FTP server). Was a beta test for a little while too. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help.

I use BP FTP and never had a problem till last night.
I get "Port 21 may already be in use". I red the posts and done all that. I disable my cable modem and rebooted and turned on my server and get the same message even with it disabled....I uninstalled BP and reinstall still same error.
I did the Netstat and things are normal there also. I tried to change prots but get the same message on every port I try.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks for you time. :)

Do you have a full version or are you using a trial version or a hacked version?

Have you tried upgrading to the newest version? 2.21 is the latested and greatest
Were you running the ftp server as a service? If so what process did you have in place to do so?

I run it so peeps can DLed from me.
I dont know what process you are refering to. I just open the program and click the lightning bolt to turn it on.
Somehow I need to find whatever is using that port...And I dont know where to look

I just upgraded and that seemed to do it..Thank y9ou very much mntsnow :)
What is a good range of ports to use for FTP?
Mntsnow

Well I personally use the default ports for FTP since I am on a business connectivity plan with my ISP and thus I dont have to "hide" my ftp server(s)
Glad to hear your up and running again. If in the future you need to find out what is using a port you can do so by doing a "netstat -o" and then taking the "pid #" and checking that against the running processes in on your computer and then you can determine what process(application) is using that port :)

Hi all,
I think I have the same problem as every here, I tried all the step you guys were talking about, but I still can't run my own ftp.
I got this message: "SERVER: Unable to start server, port 21 may already be in use."
-------
I got the newest BP ftp 2.2.1 build 11
I'm using Window XP professional SP1
I'm behind router, not firewall (I've uncheck the firewall protection, but still not sure if there is any other firewall to disable)
Norton Antivirus 2004 pro (wonder if this is the problem)
----------
I tried port 69, 6969, 888, 113, and I always got the same problem.
I tried to uncheck the IIS server
I forward my ports
I did almost everything on my knowledge, but still can't turn on my ftp.
Can someone help me to resolve this problem?
Can someone show me how to see which ports I'm using and which ports are available?
Thank you all....

Welcome to XPC, pandavoy! :)
Maybe this (http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8247) thread will help you identify what is using ports!
:)

Thanks for the trick, but somehow, I don't see any process using Port 21... so why do I keep having this error message with bullet proof "Unable to start server, port 21 may already be in use"
can someone help me? I really need to open an ftp

Sounds like you still have FTP from IIS installed on your box. If the built-in FTP is installed it will control the port and thus bulletproof will not be able to use it. Go Add Remove programs and then add/remove windows system programs Then Internet Information Service and click on the "details" button to see all of the sub-applications and UNCHECK FTP :) and then complete the wizard and let it update and then reboot . That should free up port 21 for you.
Enjoy

I did that this morning, nothing was check. I went on the detail, but nothing was checked. That's why I was wondering if you guy can help me.
My IIS FTP Service is disabled.
BTW, thanks for the quick reply. Please keep helping me. :p
I use Cable internet. Do you think that's the problem?

I think I figure out the problem...
1) If you are running Windows 2000 Server (and higher), make sure IIS FTP Service is disabled.
2) Make sure the port xx you defined for the ftp server is not already used by another application.
3) Try to change to another port number (server option / port number), if the server can start on this different port, the previous port may already be in use by another application.
4) Remove any ip you added to the "server option/multi ip settings" list (leave it empty), entering ip that are not available on the computer in addition to enabling "listen only to ip matching the list" would make the server unable to listen for connection.
My problem was number 4.
now I have another problem. Since I'm behind router, this is what it shows when I start serving my ftp: 1/22/2004 10:42:02 PM - FTP Server On-line : IP(s) 192.168.1.103, on port 21
The IP shown is my local IP, but my real IP is : 24.200.82.225
can anyone show me how to change: FTP Server On-line : IP(s) 192.168.1.103, on port 21 to 24.200.82.225 ???
Thank you one more time

Leave Bulletproof alone with it's private IP as that is correct since you are behind a router....What you now have to do is open and FORWARD port 20 & 21 TCP traffic on the router to the private ip of the server.

I did the forwarding those port
but when I use fXP to connect to my IP: 24.200.82.225, it keep saying
Connecting to 24.200.82.225 #8
Connection failed (Connection timed out)
btw, I'm using a linksys

Your ISP is probably blocking port 21 traffic then (as earlier you mention your running cable and most cable providers dont allow server services and is against their TOS)....Try using a different port ...of course reconfiging BP to use the different port to match. Try 2121 for example

I can finally connected to my own ftp, with my IP, that's not a problem anymore...
I used FlashFXP to connect to it, but when I'm in my ftp, I don't see anything and I got this error:
Data Socket Error: Connection refused
List Error
So I went in my FlashFXP and remove the Passive mode and it worked. I can go through all the folder in my ftp, but I cannot see what's inside my subfolder. Anyone know why? This is the message:
List (cached)
List Complete.
But I see nothing in "subfolder"... I have no problem with the main folder, but I can't see anything in the subfolder.
Please help 1 more time
thank you

Do you actually have files within your sub folder? What permissions are assigned to those files?

My ftp work now, people can see and download file now. My problem was because I use Passive mode to read file. Once I remove it, it work fine. Thank you all for the help.
One last question, How do I turn my server to enable FXP?
and how do I check if it work or not?

It's under the options of the bulletproof manager.
