Whats a halfway decent mainboard for a XP1800
I would recommend VIA KT266A, KT333 or KT400 chipsets based MoBo.
After the nForce2 chipset release and the KT400A (that should be released soon), the prices of older chipsets are getting cheaper.
The VIA KT266A is really a *fast* one and i still have an Epox 8KHA+ MoBo and i'm totally happy with it. While the KT333 and KT400 is the same as KT266 with faster FSB.

The following are my recommendation one for each chipset with a small difference in price. IMO, non of them will let you down.

Epox8K9AI is an inexpensive solution for you, it will give wide ability for tweaking and OCing .. simply an amazing fast and stable MoBo:
Epox Motherboard for AMD, Socket A Processors, Model EP-8K9AI
Chipset: KT400 Chipset + VIA VT8235
Onboard Audio: Realtek ALC201A integrated sound
For $69.00 +$5 shipping

or the following solid board:
Gigabyte GA-7VAC,VIA KT333 chipset FOR AMD K7 ATHLON ATX motherboard RETAIL
Chipset:VIA KT333 + 8235
Onboard Audio:AC97 Realtek ALC650
For $67.00 shipped!

or this MSI with a really decent sound, it is stable but will not OC the same as the Epox one:
MSI Motherboard for Socket A (462) Athlon Processors. Model# KT2 Combo-L - RETAIL
Chipset:VIA KT266A, VT8235
Onboard Audio: Realtek ALC650 6CH
For $57.00 +$5 shipping

and also whats a good HSF for it?
Finally, for the HS i would recommend Tt Volcano 7+ with manually controllable fan, if you are planning on OCing.
I have it on my XP1900+ and my OCed CPU is always cool even at full load. Tt V7+ is for $28.00 + $6 shipping.
If you're not OCing, then Thermaltake VOLCANO 6Cu ($16 shipped) or the noisier Tt V6Cu+ with 7000RPM fan ($17 shipped) will do the job.

PS. all the above prices are from newegg.

Happy shopping
Regards :)

(Note: I know i might get flamed for this, but pay 15 more bucks and stay away from ECS boards :bunny: )

Personally I would recommend MSI & Gigabyte boards. I've had nothing but great results with them

Personally, I have a new Soyo SY-7KV Dragon Plus that I'm very happy with.It has VIA chipset, onboard Soundblaster 5.1 audio,266 FSB, and the bios is setup for o.c.ing.Uses PC2100 memory.Guess it all depends on what you want!! Hope this will help!!!

no OCing . I picked up this cpu for cheap at the collages surplus center, it's new/sealed. the guy told me someone in the IT dept. ordered a dozen chips all the wrong kind, they were supossed to be Intel cpu's. lol, so I paid $10.00 for it, the same price they paid, just couldn't pass that up.

Whats wrong with ECS?

I'm running a Dualie ECS - D6VAA with onboard raid. with two 850E's, running 2000 server and it works mighty fine.

Edit: the intended use will be my new game box and RC5-72 cow :D

$10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats amazing

Well I built a machine for a friend his was an xp2000 and a MSI kt333 board. I would have no hesistation recommending that board to you. The layout was good and the features were good and it should be cheap now :)

btw if you see anymore of those let us all know as I think few of us would pass up a 1800 at $10 :D

^ :)

You got a great deal on that chip so I'd recommend getting a great mb :D (i.e. not ecs, chaintech, pc chips, etc). I'll through the Soltek name brand into the mix with those mentioned above.
