I have an interesting problem, I have broadband service from Comcast, which I currently split between two computers with a router. After Comcast acquired ATT, i started having problems using internet explorer. It would work for a few minutes and all of a sudden, it would not be able to connect to any site. Any other program connected to the internet (like AIM, mIRC, FTP) before Internet Explorer does not work, still stays connected, however if they are not running, and I try to make them connect after IE stops working, they refuse. I am not sure whether this is a router problem, or the actual service. I have made sure it is not just Internet Explorer by trying Opera and Mozilla, I still have the same problems. I also have tried port forwarding port 80 as a last resort, and that still does nothing.

Anyone have an idea what the problem is? Thanks alot guys,

I actually had this very same problem, it worked sometimes for about a hour then all the sudden it stopped.
I never got it fixed, i ended up with re-installing windows.

have you tried uninstalling the router and nic card and then do the set up again to connect to the interent?

Might be a ipconfig issue or something. with the change over it might be trying to find and reconice all its clients and since you are behind a router it is not seeing you to authorize or update your ip number.

not sure, not an expert. been having other issues myself with the merger of attbi/comcrap.

Well i even changed networks cards but they all gave the same problem, and my connection comes from the server that we have here.

Fire up Internet Exploder, click on "tools" then select "internet options". From that window take a look at the "connections" tab. The settings got hosed somehow so you'll need to reset them.

Did you try using another web browser?

It's not Iexplorer, at least it wasn't in my case, i tryed netscape for example.
What it simply did was not connect anymore, i was connected to IRC but when i tried to reconnect it failed.

1. Are you running any software firewalls such as ZA, NIS, etc?

2. Have you tried installing a different NIC?

What OS are you running?
Are you networked?

A lot of cable systems are blocking IP's and kicking connections if they see more than one MAC address coming from one IP.

I also found that if you use Win98 that a lot of times your TCP/IP stack can get corrupted REALLY easy. The fix? Like stated, a reload. W2K or XP shouldn't have the same problem.

And also, do you have cable TV service? If so, what does your TV picture look like? How many TV's do you have? Is the cable modem segregated from the TV splitters? If you have excessive line noise (high signal or really really low signal) the modem will drop it's connection or cause a bad response to any program trying to access the modem.

I used to be a @Home Data Specialist for AT&T Broadband/Cable for 11 years. :)

Try coding your DNS settings into the router. That could be your problem.. Helped me.

i think i have the same or similar problem too. just a few minutes ago in fact my connection just dropped but weird thing is i think the rest of the network is fine though and its just mine that disconnects. whats different with my computer as opposed to the rest of the network though is that my MAC is associated withthe account and not any others. but to fix it and get back running again ive found all i have to do is a release/renew ip fromt he router we have and then everything is fine again. its still frustrating though that all of a sudden everything drops for no real apparent reason

Ohh sorry Didnt know this was a "on going" problem. What make, model and version of firmware are you running on your router?

What happens if you assign a static ip to your system? How long do you have the dhcp leases set for within your router?

Modem is a Motorola Surfboard 4100
Router is Netgear RP114 Firmware 3.26

and i just looked and you cant set the lease time for the DHCP. its a real simple basic router and has very little options ive found out :(

I have the same modem (motorola surfboard) and the same router (netgear rp114) and the same comcast internet connection, and I have the same exact problem.

All internet connections to different applications such as AOL instant messenger work. However explorer stops working and it trys to detect proxy settings. When explorer stops I try pinging a site and that doesn't work either.

I do have digital cable t.v. and I must say the picture is not that great sometimes. The picture gets pixelated and sound skips at times. Maybe there is excessive line noise on the cable like someone suggested. I do not know.

Any ideas? Should I call the cable company? I doubt they will want to help me once I tell them that the internet is being shared.

Run a spyware checker like search and destroy or adaware ect as your connection might have been compromised by some spyware program
