I'm looking to be able to have people ftp web sites they make to my server. I'm running win2k advanced server with iis. I have 4 sites running fine-no prob. I want to host for a friend of mine. Do I need a ftp server, or other software for this to happen. He wants to publish from frontpage.
Any help will be greatful. Thanks in advanced!

With IIS if you activate the Frontpage extenstions he will be able to update his webpage right from Frontpage. no need to FTP seperately.
If you want to have an FTP server I personally will suggest Bulletproof FTP Server. Very easy to setup and configure and if free to try for 30 days and then like 29 bucks to own.

Ok I'll look into that, but I want name and password to access. I have a seperate folder for his sites. I would love it to keep everything seperate. If I choose to use a ftp software can I accomplish what I want to do? Or is frontpage the easyest? Computer stuff is a great hobby of mine right now, thanks to sites like this one, and a few others.
Cool about diving! I teach and operate a dive shop in Warren, RI. Check out my site http://www.eastbaydivecenter.com That is the first web site I made. I am a frontpage guy, still learning here. Someday I'll move on to bigger things.

Either way can do what your wanting to do. When Frontpage is setup correctly when he logs in with his username and password (Yes you have to create him an account on the server and assign him as the administrator of his website) he will only see his files.
In bulletproof FTP when he logs in via his username and password which you setup seperately from within the application you set is "path" and he only has access to that "path and subdirectories of that path"
Edit. Great start on the website! I started out as a frontpage junkie too :D and now I'm hosting all my own websites along with this one :) and have moved on to other coding for the most part. I'm actually a Padi certified Assistant Instructor. # AI-82047 Someday I hope to have the time to get me a full instructor certification.

MnTsnow, Thanks for the help. Happy Easter to all! I tryed for a bit, but I can't seem to get it. I understand what needs to be done but it didn't work for me. I want to upload frontpage web sites to my server. I have a Linksys router, could that be blocking me? Mabey I'll wait till next week when my business cabel connection gets here. I am port fowarding around 80 to get my sites to work.(Mabey that's it) My mail server only sends because my isp prevents me getting the mail back (I think) I will be back on the board to let you know if it works or for more advice.
Thanks again

You betcha Brian, My pleasure. btw you might check out a fellow DSL website buddy who has a bunch of info on how to setup a webserver on a DSL/Cable connection. It's at www.dslwebserver.com and the guy that runs that site is also named Brian ;) between XPC and His Site I know we can get you up and running in no time at all :)

Ok, all set with my connection. I have been working on my mail server. Finally got that working just fine. Now on to ftp sites. I guess I need a walk thru - I do understand the theory on how its going to work, but I have no experience in this. I need help with front page publishing to my server. Any help would be great!
Hay MnTsnow - dslwebserver got me to your site! I learned so much the last year, Thanks to all on both sites!

Do you want to publish to the server directly from Frontpage itself, or do you intend on using a third party program to access the FTP server?

Looking to publish from frontpage itself. I intend on hosting a frontpage site for my best friend. So he needs to publish to my server without my interaction. Thanks for the reply.

Cool on DSLWebserver site :) . Have you followed the tutorial that he has on setting up the webserver? Basically all you will have to do is create an account on the server (http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/sbs-wk2-add-user.html) for your buddy and then add him to the Website admin group and he will be able to publish directly to the server.

Ok got users on my server down. now what? How do I tell it to go to the web site folder? How do I get web sites to upload to it? I am one who does it once then I learn. However I do understand all that I have read. I'm just not to sure of myselfe. The website admin group, how do I do that?
Thanks again. I can't say that enough!

From within the Console for IIS right click on the website you setup for your buddy and choose properties and then choose the "0perators tab" and add your buddies account to it. Save it and now from within Frontpage hit "Open web" from the file menue and put in the URL (for example if my site was frontpage enabled I would type http://www.xtremepccentral.com) and hit the Open button. If the frontpage extenstions were installed you should get a login window. Put in your username and password and there you go :)

Ok I have the user settings down. Thanks for that input :) I added that user in iis. But still having problems connecting. I get the username and password box, but it still won't let me in. Any more ideas? Oh ya, server extensions seems funny. it says server ext. admin program not compatable with server. (something like that) I have frontpage ext. 2002 installed (I think lol)

Have you run the upgrade from the Admin IIS site? and applied the 2002 extenstions to all the sites

What error are you getting when trying to connect? And is the Website your trying to work with using an actual Domain name?

If you don't want to use Win2x server, I woudl highly reccomend the program I am usign to host www.92turbo.com and www.veedubb.com. I use Miniportal from www.instantservers.com. Got some GREAT plugins and it is very easy to use an setup. It also has a web interface that can be accessed from anywhere.

Thanks paul, I have a bit invested in what I have. I have been a windows guy all my life and don't really want to change. (yet!) I think its something I am over looking or a stupid setting I have wrong.
Mntsnow,
The error I get is...website does not exist. (BUT IT DOES!!!) uugggg. Any way I can connect and save now but it won't let me use the publish button. I should be able to type in ftp://mysitename.com and it should work. I can get in by "open web" in frontpage then type in http://mysitename.com (that does work)
Thanks for the help (Again)

I can see the site on the internet, so I don't think so.

Ahhh Well FRONTPAGE Publishing is working as you say you can do it by "openWeb" But to do it via FTP is slightly different...You will need to setup an FTP account and point it to the correct location for your buddy. (Sorry I miss understood what you were trying to accomplish when you mentioned FRONTPAGE.... because when you edit the "Open Web" and hit save it automatically does the update on the server (as long as your connected to the Frontpage enabled website)...Thus there is no need to hit "publish via ftp".

Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!! You got it Mntsnow. That works for me, either way will work. As long as I am doing it right. If I decide to set up an ftp account, I need a ftp server running right?
By the way Mntsnow, I am running the distributed software now.

Cool on the RC5 :) and Welcome!
As for FTP if you do decide to go that route I personally would suggest Bulletproof FTP Server...Very robust and easy to setup and gives you SO much more control compaired to the built-in FTP server software that 2K server has. (like being able to create accounts that DO NOT have anything else to with the server thus if those usernames and passwords get found out they still cant login to the server and cause problems...Just mess around with the ftp location of that user :). It has a 30 day free trial and then is like 35 bucks to buy. http://www.bpftpserver.com/ btw. I use bulletproof ftp and love it

Cool thanks, I am going to try that. It will accept ftp from front page right? That is my final goal.
The rc5 thing, I really don't know what its doing. It didn't give me a name or password to join a team. That will be the next challenge!

For the RC5 stuff just follow the instructions I have in the Team Forum (Sticky thread) and you will be off to the races :)
Yes when using Bulletproof ftp you can use the "publish via ftp" option in frontpage.
