Well guys I've had it with MS..
After installing XP I feel that its time for me to move away from the mainstream OS and Slick the 2k off my work box and servers.
Its been a long process to get me here but linux seems to be more stable and has more features I want.
Ive got the linux distro I will use on the servers,Engarde linux.( http://www.engardelinux.org )(Still open to thoughts)
What distro should grace my main desktop?
It has to be usable and have all the proggys that I use in 2k pro+
Photoshop is hard to lose(guess win4lin is the choice there)
I do use office...kde might pull that off
I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO USE MY CDRW(udf is also a must??)
I have VM ware but really dont want to run it
SO without furher adoo(sp?)
What distro

Well, I'd have to say Mandrake Linux 8.1 (http://www.xtremepccentral.com/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=9).
StarOffice is sufficient enough to run any office apps., and as for Win4Lin, haven't tried it yet w/Mandrake, but it is compatible with it. Never actually heard of Engarde Linux:confused: , checked the link...seems like a very stable and Secure OS, based on what services they offer.
As for Mandrake, it's highly compatible, resourceful, fast, secure, and even runs the occasional 3D game (ie. Quake/Tux/etc.). There's software & support for DVD/CD Burners/USB/etc.
Just my thoughts, should have listed Mandrake though...:)
Glad to have a Linux user onboard!

I've been using RH for the past 5 years so I'm used to it and biased towards it.
However, after having seen Suse 7.3, I think even Mandrake needs to catch up. The Pro edition is the best user-friendly Linux distro I've seen. So if you're not into customising, I think the Suse is your best bet.
Caldera/Slackware/Debian should be left as third choices due to their "native" feel and "expert" touch.

I'd say SuSE,too.Though I also use MDK 8.1 and it's good all-round distro(choose multi-media during package selection and it sets up scsi emulation for your burner so you can write cds right away),SuSE comes closer to a business-oriented distro out of the box as it were.
In the end we can make Linux do what ever we want it to do,to an extent we'll never see using Windows.

very nice SalaTar. I'm not sure if you've setup your server or not but if you're really looking for security I'd go with OpenBSD (http://www.openbsd.org). It might be harder to setup for you but the BSD's are known for being good server OS's and OpenBSD is well known for its out of the box security.
I like Mandrake a lot but I recently switched to Red Hat. I'm still not totaly sure which one I want but I'll figure it out.

well like prae I've recently switched to Redhat 7.2, was using Mandrake 8.1. I've found that mandrake has a lot of GUI tools to help the user take care of administrative tasks. I think RedHat has a few too but not as organized IMO.
Its a toss up between RH and Mandrake, but I haven't tried SuSE though :cooldude:
