I just read an interesting "tutorial" on how to set up dual monitors. However, there is one thing I don't understand. Having never seen a dual monitor system in person, I don't understand what it would be used for. What goes on the second monitor? What is the benefit of a dual monitor system?

Thanks!

Dual monitors allow you to have an extension to your desktop. It will allow you to display 2 applications simutaneously. Imagine surfing the internet while watching a DVD or maybe have a spreadsheet running on one monitor and an aimge editor in the other....

Once you use dual monitors I can tell you this......You will hate going to work and having to work with a single monitor! lol

Sounds interesting, I'll have to see about getting some video cards and another monitor. Thanks for the info!

Roadkill, post the link to the tutorial you read. I'd be interested in checking it out.

Thanks

This is for Windows 98. I don't know if it is the same procedure for other Windows versions.

I use Dual monitors, and all I can say is it rocks, it makes everyting easier. Recently one of my monitors went out, and it's like operating on a handicapped system. Mtsnow is right, once you have it, going back to one sucks.
My setup was 2 17" monitors, and since one went out I was thinking of going to a single large monitor, like a 22", I'm going to stick with the dual setup.

I've done dual setups on WinME,Win2k, and WinXP, all with two video cards, and all with a single card. Either way it is a pretty straightfoward setup, all done from display properties.
The only trouble I ran into was with the 2 video card setup(one PCI,one AGP)when the bios was set to AGP initial display, the second monitor didn't work in Windows, I had to change it to PCI.
Also, when both monitors(CRT)were set to the same refresh rate they interfered with each other, unless I moved them far enough apart that it wasn't practical. This problem hasn't shown up with the single video card setup.

Dual monitors make a really nice desktop. Some uses as described above, but I like running gamespy in the second monitor while I play games in the first. I also use the secoind monitor for the terminal session into my server and the main one for local work...makes administering servers really easy.

The big hassle about running dual monitors is both have to have similar video quality. It's very irritating to have one crummy picture quality on one while looking at one with a nice crisp picture. If you seriously plan to do dual monitors, you need to use the highest quality monitors you can find.

Looking at dual cards vs. two single cards, I'll have to go with two singles, no way can I afford one of those duals!

Anyone ever hear of a card called Jeronimo J2 by Appian?

I have a couple of Jeronimo Pro cards in my desk drawer at work. They were nice in their time, but ATI kind of stole their fire.
