Hi,

For some reason my pc started to make a lot of noise (literally) when I turned it on this morning. I could not make it start properly. It complained about my display adapter settings, although I have not touched them. Then later on when I was playing Counter-Strike 1.5 (3D-action game) I noticed that there were bright purple spots in random locations in the map which were not there before. I suspect that there might be a problem with my display adapter (3DPOWER GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB TV-OUT), I have had it for one and a half year now. Has anyone come across similar kind of symptoms? Can anyone guess what the problem could be?

I'll assume you havent updated any drivers for a while . If you have recently updated your drivers you may want to go back and use the older ones.

One thing you could check is if the card is seated in the slot properly and hasn't come loose. It wouldnt hurt to pull the card completly out and reseat it into the slot. Sometimes that can do the trick and save you a lot of trouble.

I have had troubles that this has fixed but I will admit I have never seen purple spots in games or on my monitors.

Welcome to the boards.

Welcome to XPC.

I will also add to double check your vid cards chipset for overheating since you say it started after playing games. Also I would suggest checking the seating of the card too.

But your mentioning that the System started making noise concerns me. Have you determined where the nosie was/is coming from? PSU fan? CPU fan? Chipset fan?

I got the same video card and mine is running without a fan, and i use the latest drivers, so that can't be the problem (and yes i also play CS)

And welcome to XPC :)

Thanks for the replies! I got rid of the purple spots by installing the drivers again, but still every time I turn on the computer (not while restarting) I get this a long series of beeping sounds and no picture in my monitor. I have to repeat booting for a few times before I can get it to work. Then I get this error message that either my display or my display adapter has a problem (even though the drivers are ok, also I checked the BIOS settings to make sure and they seemed ok too). After these inital problems the graphics start to work fine again. My integrated display adapter does not have similar kind of problems.

The problem was that the card was not properly in place. I found this out second time I was putting the card into the slot. I don't use screws to secure the cards but a metal clip (came with the case) that presses down on the top parts of all the cards. I noticed that when I press that clip down the far end of the card rises slightly. Propably what happened was that me disturbing the monitor cable, vibrations inside the case and wear had made the card come more loose than normally, creating the beeping sounds and all the problems. Now I'm off to buy some screws. Thanks for your time!
