I have an old 30GB Maxtor drive here that has been giving me problems for a couple months now. Initially I lost 28 gigs of stuff:( that was backed up:)

I have had to write 1's and 0's to the thing twice now because of bad sectors. The warranty ends in May. I can no longer trust this drive but can't RMA it because I have to try to repair it by writing 1's and 0's to the thing ,which does fix it temporally, before I can get a valid code.

My questions are do you think I can call Maxtor and get an RMA or am I SOL? Is there a way to kill this thing so I can get an RMA once and for all? I keep transferring data to it and defraging it hoping it will die a permanent death but after doing this all I am getting is bad clusters.

Remember as of May I will have to throw this thing in the trash if it does die which it will do the day after the warranty runs out, I'm sure.

I would say try to get an RMA from them...it can't hurt. I was impressed the one time that I had to RMA a drive through them. (Then again, this drive was D-E-A-D...)

You might as well give it a shot, though. The worst thing that they can do is tell you no...and have you go through the DOD wipe again and again.

I've had that problem with a WD once. Got the warranty people on the horn and when they asked for a code I told them that the drive was dead and thus the diagnostic software was unable to run...They issued me a RMA on the spot

I would think they would take it back. I've returned drives before and described the prob as intermittent failures. Although, I returned them to system builders and not the factory.

I will give them a call then.

I am concerned about doing an advanced RMA if I do tell them it is dead and it's not. AFAIC it's dead because it is of no use to me.

I had no problems last time I RMAed a Maxtor.
