View Full Version : XP Pro vs. Win2k vs. ME
Windows XP benchmark tests (http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/software/os/story/0,2000023564,20258494-9,00.htm)
Look like Windows XP is slower on just about every area... :(

Looks like my OS: WinME did pretty well! :)
Not good to hear about WinXP...I agree with countless others that when MSFT sends out an update to XP, that should fix things up quite a bit!
Until then, I'll stick with what I'm stuck with: WinME ;)

Sorry but thats not quite how it looked to me....It won 5 Win2K won 5 and ME actually won 6 in that round... But then again I'm not a big gamer which was the area's that it basically "lost" in... Give me a system that is solid OVERALL and I will smile and chuckle to myself everytime I hear people complain about their "optimized for one fuction" systems....Sorry but this is a world of give and take.... You want faster performance in one area...when then It will be lost somewhere else... The trick is that you have to find that "balance" :)
also just FYI here is something that will help XP perform even better the longer you run it too! :)
One other anomaly you should be aware of. XP has a number of self-tuning features that are designed to enhance performance based on your system configuration and usage pattern. For example, XP watches which applications you use and, once every 3 days during idle time, it will automatically place the associated files near one another on the hard drive and closer to the more dense outer edge of the disk. This reduces the seek times and should improve application launch speed, especially on larger hard drives. Currently, the BAPCo benchmarks do not measure application launch times.
the BAPCo benchmarks which just btw was lost by ONLY 1 point! but did also mange to win the Office Productivity testing by 2 In gaming it only lost to 2k in Quake III by .2fps thats POINT 2! but beat 2K in the other tests quite healthly in comparison....
Also keep in mind that Win2K has had 2 service packs of further development and feedback! Just keep this scores and come back with the exact same hardware when XP has had 2 sp's and watch those numbers get trounced! :)
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, Mntsnow...
But as you can see, when it comes to multi-tasking environments, Win2k is faster and more responsive. I think this is due to all the cosmetic work and additional services that Win XP has... Don't get me wrong, I think Windows XP has some great features that Win2k doesn't have...

I have used all three OS's ... Here is my take on them
ME: worthless .. I have this on a brand new dell, and it crashes and has horrible memory managment even with all the latest patches. All I run is AIM and Outlook .. stupid OS anyway
XP: least experience is with this one, I have used it and its nice in that its easily configurable to the way you want it to look. However I do not like the fact that alot of companies seem to be slow to relase drivers .. maybe not an OS problem, but still one that interferes with OS use.
Win2K Pro: The OS of choice for me. Its stable, runs games well, has support for almost all hardware now. Memory mangangement is great. I really can't complain about this OS at all. I have had no problems with it on the 5 or so systems I use it on.
Just my take on things :)

Yeah, drivers do seem to be an issue for certain hardware manufacturers. Luckily, I only have one device, my scanner, that doesn't have XP support. Hopefully sometime soon, the driver will be available. Until then, I have my Win2k. The only thing that's been really annoying me on XP is Netmeeting 3.01 which seems to lose the USB web camera after some time of continuous use. I know there's nothing wrong with the XP installation because these problem has continued through 5 installs of Windows XP and Mntsnow also seems to have the same problem. The camera under Windows 2000 using Netmeeting works flawlessly. I have a good feeling it may be a XP bug?

I agree that XP is a tad bit slower but definately more stable... everyday tasks I usually do in XP but when I want to game I always usually use ME and 2k for Graphics design.
