Hi All.
I am hosting a web site using Apache 1.3 (started with version 2) running on a WinXP Pro machine. The problem is that I can view my webpage using http://localhost or 127.0.0.1 but people on the outside can't view my page.
I'm running WinXP Pro with a xDSL connection (SWBELL isp) through a Linksys router. I have port 80 forwarded in my router. I'm running Apache 1.3 at the moment. I don't have a FireWall enabled. I can use my internet connection without problems.
This is a new installtion of XP. I originally had Apache version 2 installed and it was doing the same thing so I thought I'd try Apache version 1.3 since I have previously used it successfully hosting this page ( before the reinstalltion of XP). When I installed Apache 1.3 and used my old conf.http file, Others still have the same problem accessing my webpage.
 I am stuck. I don't know what else to consider. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure that you don't have the XP default firewall turned on? When I first installed XP, I wondered why I couldn't host a game of Ghost Recon on my machine...come to find out that the XP firewall blocks incoming traffic on most ports, unless the connection originated from inside the firewall.

Who is your ISP? Are you positive that your ISP is not blocking port 80 traffic to your box? Have you double checked to make sure your XP firewall is disabled as it would normally block port 80 traffic as well.

what is your IP address?
have them try that first.
If it works, then your passing traffice fine.
If you have a router, add that machines IP into the DMZ.

Okay, here's what I now know about my problem.
1. We WERE able to get to my web page by using the modem and disconnecting the Linksys Router.
2. Connected the Router back up. Did some packet sniffing while USING the router and found that Apache received the GETs and sent Responses. The end user never recevied Apache's responses and ended up just resending the requests until timeout. The end user also had packet sniffing stuff and really didn't get any responses. This tells me that port forwarding thru the router is working at least on the inward bound traffic.
3. I've used this same setup previously - Same PC, Network Card, DSL, Same Apache version, same webpage. The only thing I think is different this time around (after a clean XP Pro install) is that I have SP1 installed. Also I was previously using SWBell as my ISP. For a time I dropped DSL and resigned up and SWBell was now partnered with Yahoo! (Woopie!!!) but as far as my connection I can't tell any difference.
I also had dual boot and was running the same setup under Win98 without problems. I still have my old 98 setup but currently can't access it.
Other than that I can't think of anything else that's different.
BTW my Linksys firmware is at version 1.39 and I know there are newer releases I just haven't updated. (hasn't been necessary)
Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks All!!

did you at one time have ZoneAlarm installed on this box?

I've never had ZoneAlarm installed (although the person that's been helping me test has it on his pc)

Thanks for all of the ideas.
Well, I updated the Linksys router firmware from 1.39 to 1.44.2 and we were able to connect to the website externally. I'm not sure exactly what the conflict was but the only thing that I can think of was that I installed SP1 during my XP install this time. Anyway, maybe I'll go ahead and reinstall Apache 2.44 and see if it still works. Regards All.

looks like your up and running! Glad you were able to get the router updated and straightened out.
