I must say I'm really starting to like this SME server os! It is the freeware version aka dev version of the Mitel Networks 6000 Managed Application Server (whew what a mouthful!) Here is some info on the Full Mitel version (http://www.mitel.com/products/products.cfm?p_id=151) and the Dev version can be found here (http://www.e-smith.org/) and the download page is here (http://www.e-smith.org/downloads)

A few of the nice things that this server can do is:
The 6000 MAS which is the "Pay for" version enables companies to but the "developers edition (freeware) can do it all too if you add in the additional moduals which are freebies too :):

Enjoy automated virus protection against hackers and other threats (there is some cost involved on this one in both versions)

Easily integrate bothWindows and Macintosh clients and NT/2000 networks

Communicate with customers flexibly and securely

Allow staff to stay connected any time and anywhere

Block access to inappropriate, non-business-related Web sites

Safeguard valuable information

Improve your company's professional image on the Internet

Enable staff to collect and store information efficiently

Ensure that your network is always available

Integrate easily with your existing equipment

Securely connect two or more offices (VPN)

Very quick and simple to use. Check it out

a great place to get some of the add-on moduals is http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/

I ganked this from their website...

This release is based on the Linux 2.4 kernel, uses the "ext3" journalling filesystem, has enhanced Windows and Macintosh client support and the packet filtering code has been upgraded to include stateful packet inspection.

...so it's just Linux? When I read your post and the other post on this "OS" I was curious but it looked like it's just another Linux distro tailored for a specific use. After hitting their website I'm no longer interested since I already do all that stuff without having to worry about licensing. Am I missing something somewhere?

This is a *nix based project. It is GNU so no licensing issues for the non commerical version.

I'm now in the beta testing of running the XPC site on SME. I have a copy of this site now fully running on it.

I have the Forums, Photogallery and even the RC5 Stats program now working on it. (I built this system in hopes of finally moving it into the dc where I work and needed to have everything working in a single box instead of the multiple boxes I currently use)

btw the box is 2U rackmount with a Intel STL2 mobo, dual p3 1gig with 1 gig of ecc memory with 4 10K 9gig scsi "hotswap" drives in a raid 5 array on a U160 64bit LSI MegaRaid controller.

Now I'm testing it to make sure it's good and stable and then if it is I will copy over the current info (the live databases) and change which IP the box uses and it will be live without a single interruption (except for the minute or two as I change around network cables :)

Cool...that should be pretty fast for a site server.

You still running the SME, Mike?

I keep hearing from others that they're now trying/using SME. And they seem to like it?
