Well, I've completely migrated to Windows XP Pro now and so far I like it more than Windows 2000 now that I got the multi-tasking problem solved. One thing I really like about XP is the option to use foreign language programs (non-uni-code programs) which enable me to use foreign language fonts as well as be able to read text in the foreign language GUI. This is something that wasn't possible on Windows 2000. Another great feature is the "System Restore" feature. Not only will it recover the OS to the last recovery point that was created by the user, it will also recover saved data! Unlike Ghost or other imaging utilities which delete data that was saved after the image was created, XP "System Recovery" will keep the new data and recover the backed up data if "System Recovery" is active on that particular drive.. As far as the built in Internet Firewall, I can't comment much on it since I don't use it. I just use the Linksys firewall. But I hear the XP firwall does a decent job...
As far as application compatibility on XP vs. Windows 2000, I haven't noticed any improvement in the applications that I use. ICQ 2001 build #3278 seems to have a problem with its "Start with system startup". ICQ seems to startup even when you uncheck the option under ICQ Preference" However, I was easily able to solve this problem by killing the application using a startup manager utility. The only reason I continue to use this version of ICQ is that I have an "Ad Remover" patch. It appears that an Ad Remover patch isn't available yet for the newest version.
Hopefully SP1 for XP will have some application compatibility patches. Another disadvantage is XP's IE6 which seems to be quite system font dependent! The more fonts you have, the longer it takes IE6 to initialize. However, once the browser window is open, it's smooth sailing from there besides the fact that some sites don't seem to display properly because they weren't coded for IE6. One workaround for this was to change the encoding to "User Defined"...
