this is what is happening so far.

i just installed serv-u on one system and smartftp on another system.

i can not get a connection on smartftp.

i have zone alarm and a linksys router befsr41.

i used "ftp.mp3.com" as the domain name.

i assigned an account login name and a password and set account admin privilee as "group"

i have port 21 open(or so i think)

in "pasv port range" i put 2000-2010

i put a check in "block FTP_bounce attacks and FXP"

in "allow passive mode data transfers use IP" box blank

allow passive mode data transfers and allow MDTM command to change file date/time both have a check in the boxes.

what other changes do i have to make to serv-u?

what changes do i have to make to smartftp?

what changes do i have to make in my router?(running latest firmware)

thanks for any help.

robin

btw---these two systems also have file/print sharing enabled.

i am able to see shared drives on both systems.

still working on server

i think my problem maybe with my host name.

i get this error when i try to use smartftp----

resolving host name

unknow error

connection closed

what would be my host name?

i thought all i had to do was type---ftp.mp3.com.

came accross this---

http://www.linksysftp.org/tcpip.php

i did everything in this tutorial and still no connection.

just wanted to update you on what i have been doing. i changed everything back to the way it was before i started messing around with the settings.

back to waiting for help.

part 2

maybe i'm not connecting to smartftp correctly.

in the address box i put "ftp.mp3.com" is this correct?

then i put the login, password and no check in the anonymous box and then hit connect.

What happens if you use your IP address instead? Have you asked someone to try and connect from the net, your router may not support loopback.

i tried using my IP address and it still won't connect.

no i didn't have someone else try and connect.

i have to put all the changes back in and then have someone try to connect to my server.

if my router doesn't support loopback then i will never be able to connect to my server from another one of my computers.

is this correct?

EDIT: i may have found my problem. when i setup serv-u i put ftp,mp3.com as my domain name.

i would of first had to use a program like this one

" I also recommend no-ip.com if your on dynamic. It's free"

if this is the case then that is my problem i didn't use any other program to get a domain name.

am i on the right track now?:)

It's my understanding that if loopback is not supported it only means you can't connect to your own box through the net or the IP seen by the net but you can connect through the local network by using your network IP. At least thats how mine works. In order for me to connect our other computer on the network to my ftp I have to use the IP 10.0.0.2.

Did you try everything on the troubleshooting (http://www.linksysftp.org/troubleshooting.php) page?

i will try to setup again and use the troubleshooting page and see if i can get it setup this time.

maybe i overlooked a step.

do i have to use a program to register the domain name that i picked?

LOL typing a , instead of a . happens to me all the time.

I would not even bother reg'ing a domain name if your just gonna share stuff through a ftp just use no-ip.com and your set.

thanks for helping me solve this mystery.

i am going to check out no-ip and start the tutorial setup from the beginning again.

will post back with my success story. lol

ok i did everything again.

i still can't connect from client.

i did a port scan at grc.com and port 21 is closed---your computer has responded that this port exists but is currently closed to connections.
.

my domain name is ftpmp3.no-ip.info

i turned off zone alarm on both systems.

what am i missing?

Did you forward port 21 on the router to the IP of the box running the server? You also need port 20 open. No one could get into my ftp until I added the UDP one.

My NAPT servers are configured like this:
Transport / Service / Server
tcp / 20/ftpdat / 10.0.0.2
tcp / 21/ftp / 10.0.0.2
udp / 21/ftp / 10.0.0.2

i erased everything that i did and started over.

i even deleted the name that i used at no-ip.com and started over there also.

i shutdown zone alarm while i setup again.

and lo and behold i connected.

then i put zone alarm up and made some changes there and i am still able to connect.

now for the big test.(see if anyone else can connect).

will update this information later.

thanks for all the help.

Strange..... I posted to this thread a while ago and I forgot about it. Now it's not there?

Anyway it looks like things are working for you. I can add one thing though. Here is a site to test it with since usually it won't let you test from the same ip.
